A love that should never be but happens, a life that was destroyed but never gone. Two paths cross but the outcome of it all is the mystery~

Mirai was could only stare down at the picture. She could not think and she could not

move. Her mind so far gone, she failed to hear Chinen calling her name.

"Hello!!!" Chinen waved his hand in front of her face snapping her out of her thoughts.

"Sorry." she put the picture away, Chinen shook his head, all women except for his beautiful pregnant wife, were all weird and hard to understand.

"Back from cloud nine? I got to continue with the report." He said in a small irritated tone, Mirai nodded. "All we know is this guy is a nomad to say the least, he never stays in one place for more than a night always on the run." Mirai exhaled as she looked at the picture then to Chinen. "He was actually staying here with Umika, so we can assume, he purposely was living with her to later kill her." Mirai trembled. Oh dear god! If that man that was in her house...was really this...this man in the picture then...Was she his next target?!

“Oi, are you okay?” Chinen’s voice seemed extremely concerned for his friend, it wasn’t like the girl to just zone out while they were discussing cases. Realizing her mistake, she tucked her hands under the table to make sure he wouldn’t notice her trembling hands. “I’m fine, this man...how old is he?” she needed something, anything to just use as back up to know if the man was who she is assuming him to be. “We don’t have much on the man, as I have already said his files whereabouts are currently unknown.” Sighing Mirai looked up at Chinen, as if they were having a telepathic conversation he understood what she was looking for. “Mirai, all I can say is he is believed to be around our age, possibly a year or two older but definitely not younger.” Accepting the answer that was given she took a note of his words, just in case. Honestly, how could she be in such a tight situation, it really wasn’t like her to be so reckless with how she acted. She had to get home, wether he was there or not, she had to get back and confirm if her assumptions were right or not. Somehow though somewhere at the back of her mind she was hoping he wasn’t the man, that he wasn’t such a brutal murderer, that maybe...just maybe he could be a friend to her.

Either way she had to get to the bottom of it, Mirai stood abruptly startling Chinen a bit, making him jump and unintentionally drop his coffee (Which had thankfully cooled) all over him. He gave her a look that was a cross between concern and annoyance. "My god what is the matter with you today?!" They had left the crime about an hour ago and currently  were at the precinct reviewing the case files. Mirai looked down at Chinen currently stained white shirt. "I'm sorry, but-I-You see- I gotta go." she said grabbing her things and heading for the door as she left she called back to him. "Tell Nao I said I'm sorry about the shirt!" and she was gone leaving Chinen to stare after her. "You should be saying to me" he mumbled to himself before looking down and sighing.

She practically raced through the streets just to get home. Was he still in her house? Had he gone? If he had gone where did he go? Or was he still there? was he waiting for her? was she planning to kill her. Mirai stopped herself as she stared at her front door. She needed to calm down, she was shaking all over from the anxiety. Inhaling, she put her key in and unlocked her door, slowly opening the front door of her apartment and stepping inside. She look around, no one seemed to be there. . .so. . . he was gone. Exhaling she closed the door behind her and headed for her room. She was going to need a long, long bath before she could go back to work. She walked into her room and put her bag on the bed, she was mid way done from unbuttoning her shirt, as she walked towards the bathroom only to stop dead in her tracks as a very wet, very attractive, man, wrapped in a towel walked into view. "Oh dear god." He grinned at her. "See...I knew you liked me."

“Nice try go put some clothing on, NOW!” If only looks could kill he would have been dead the exact time her eyes turned into flames of anger. Ironic isn’t it, if her eyes could kill the killer. Thankfully even if she said that aloud he was at the other side of the apartment. “I HAVE NO CLOTHING HERE!” His voice shouted from her room.”Top left drawer in the white dresser!” She yelled back. It was odd...for a man that was a murderer, well could be, she was quite natural with him. MY GOD WHAT WAS SHE THINKING HE COULD BE PLOTTING HER MURDER IN IS HEAD THIS VERY MINUTE. “What about plotting?” A low husky voice spoke from behind her startling the girl as quickly turned her head to see the culprit. “What?” what was he talking about? “Ah you seem to have forgotten that I have this wonderful affect on you that makes you speak out your thoughts without realizing it. How cute.” Ruffling her hair as he spoke as though she were some 5 year old. Annoyed she patted her hair back into place, and stared up at the now clothed man standing before her. It was so unrealistic having him here, knowing he could possibly be the murderer knowing he could possibly kill her any moment, yet here she was goofing off with the man in her apartment.

She followed him as he made his way out of her room and towards her living room, where the television sat awaiting for him to use it. "I'm sorry to be rude and all." She began "No you're not." He said and she stared at him, inhaling, checking her temper. "But. . . when do you plan on leaving?" She crossed her arms as he turned to look at her from her currently comfortable place on the couch. "I don't" Mirai's heart skipped a beat. "Not for now anyways. I don't have a place I can go back too." He had just confirmed to her that he was indeed as much a nomad as the murderer. Great did he have to put her in such a weird position. "I'd love to put you in a weird position" He asked with a very dirty look on his face. "NO!" she shot back and he shrugged. "You say no now, but you will be saying YES very soon." She turned away from him and tired very hard not think about how it was both very hot and scary that those words turned her on.'"I'm going to go shower."

A warm hand wrapped around her wrist gently, preventing her from moving away any further than she already was. Was this it? Was this going to be her end? “You never explained.” Surprised by what the man said she turned around, wrist still in his hand. “What do you mean?” Tilting her head to the side in question. “You never explained what you meant by plotting.” She swallowed as she started to feel her body heat up, how was she suppose to answer such a question, she was always such a terrible liar since she was growing up! “I m-meant it as what your reason for choosing to stay with me was...” Oh dear, even she knew her words were a far cry from convincing. Slowly he started to walk towards her leading her back into one of her walls. Startled when her body touched the coolness of the wall she looked up at him. However he didn’t seem threatening nor did it seem anything like murderous intent. His eyes looked as though, as though he lost all hope in living.

“Hmm so thats your excuse? Tsk tsk missy you forgot your badge when you left I found it on your coffee table this morning.” She bit her bottom lip in nervousness, had he figured it out? “Could it possibly be the reason your so eager to get me out is because your afraid? Afraid of an alleged murderer out on the loose, one who tricks people into trusting him? One who looks just like me?” Her voice was caught in her throat, and her eyes were trying to hard to not tear up. He knew, he knew who she was and he was going to kill her. Squeezing her eyes shut, she waited for the pain to arrive. Instead she felt his hand loosen up and let go of her wrist, a sigh was heard as she looked at him eyes now open watching his every move. He faced her eye to eye, and gave her the smallest smile. It was gentle and sweet yet apologetic, and she didn’t know why, but it was luring her in. “I can leave if you’d like.”

She honestly didn't know if she wanted him to walk out that door or not. If he left she would lose her suspect and. . . well. . . She wouldn't be able to see him again. If he stayed she could always arrest him if it turned out he really was the murderer and this way she could keep an eye on him. "So you want me to stay?" He asked cocking his head to the side, Mirai closed her eyes a moment. "If you're going to stay you really need to stop doing that." She said annoyed. "So you don't want me to leave because you'd never see me again?" He stepped closer. She could feel the heat of his body as he moved closer. "No I just want to keep an eye on you." she said opening her eyes. He was looking down on her and she felt her body tremble as his hand came up and rested on her cheek. "If you say so." he whispered as he leaned down and placed a kiss on her check before retreating back to the couch. "I am a mean cook so you'll definitely enjoy your meals while i'm around." He bragged, but Mirai couldn't but wonder if she had made the right choice and what was odder still was that fact that she could not bring herself to ask him if he had really killed that hostess.

She stood there frozen in her spot as she got lost deep in thought. Unknown to her Ryo sat there from the couch watching her as she stood there. Once snapping out of her thought he turned his head feigning as though he were watching the television. Something about him made her concerned though, he didn’t seem the least bit dangerous in that sense, but she could never guarantee it. Deciding that maybe it were best if she stayed where she was instead of sitting beside him she stayed in place as she spoke. “You haven’t told me about yourself at all...” He smirked at her as he turned his body to face her. “Why you getting interested.” His voice it was horrible, just so so horrible, it was...seductive and luring and just everything that drove her insane. “No. Not in the slightest. Lets start off with how old you are.” Staring down at him her mind was burning in flames, what if his age also matched the idea Chinen had of him. “How old do I look?” He joked with her. “I don’t know, 75?” She retorted back voice filled with sarcasm it sent chills down the man’s back. Never in his life had anyone joked about his looks, he didn’t mean to sound conceited or anything but he knew he was above average looking. Mirai deciding she would really answer this time she spoke, “I think around my age possibly 23?” She gripped the ends of her shirt as she waited for his reply. He stared back at her, and his lips curled upwards “Bingo”

She felt her blood run cold in her body. He was 23. . . that was the estimated age for the killer. "Are you trying to profile me?" He asked her as he made himself comfortable on the couch. "So wait, what are they calling me?" Mirai blinked. "What?" "You know, what's my name? Like they usually give serial killers names and such." Mirai blinked several times before moving closer to sit across from him. She was honestly a little horrified with the question. "You're serious?" She asked and he nodded. "Look I can sit around and swearing I'm innocent, but without concrete evidence that proves me innocent you will be doubtful and suspicious of me. So while I wait I might as well indulge in this." Indulge?! INDULGE! "Yes indulge." She exhaled Oh god what had she gotten herself into!? "The rose killer." She replied. "Rose killer?" he stared confused a moment before nodding. "Right...because of the rose that's left by the bodies." He turned back to the t.v. Mirai couldn't help but feel troubled, any other person would have assumed it was because it had to do with the death of women, but no one outside the precinct knew that there was a rose found by the bodies, that information had not been released to the public and the fact that he knew that meant he had to have been at the crime scene.

“Ah you’re starting to wonder why I know that, right?” He leaned forward stretching out his body as he leaned on the edge of the couch smiling up at her. Honestly this man must think that she was some kind of new shiny toy he could mess with whenever he had wanted to. “Yes, actually I am.” She tried to hold all confidence she could possibly put into her voice as she spoke back. “Hmmm.” He hummed as he nodded his head up and down in satisfaction. This girl was interesting, very interesting. Mirai started to feel uncomfortable as the silence continued while the man on the couch stared at her. Could you blame her? This man, a possible murderer was staring her up and down, she surely had every right to be at least a bit discomforted by knowing that. “Am I that scary?” His voice echoed in her mind as he spoke. Slowly shaking her head at him trying to let him know he wasn’t. “Good, because I promise I don’t bite...much.” His words were definitely not what she had suspected. It was filled with playfulness and teasing, something about him seemed so childlike when he spoke like that. A slight smile creeped up on her face without her realizing, but it didn’t go unnoticed by Ryo.

"You like me don't you." Mirai stared at him a little perplexed at his statement. "What?" "You're smiling." Mirai quickly began to wipe her face as if that would clean the smile off of her face. "So what? my smiling means I like you?" "I get the feeling you don't smile very often." He stood from the couch and walked right up to where she was. He wasn't that much taller than her but he was still tall enough to look down at her. "I'll make it my job to make you smile." He whispered as he bent down and placed a kiss on her cheek then headed towards the door. "Where are you going?!" The words left her lips before she could even register she thought them and they were demanding they were more like worried. "I'll be back, I kind of want something with strawberries in it" "oh..." "Weren't you going to shower?" He grinned as he stared at her the front door open. "Right. . ."

As she watched him start to turn around a little bulb at the back of her mind lit up. Running towards her jacket searching through it’s pockets, she grabbed something cool in her hands. “WAIT” she screamed as she ran after him, sadly she slipped in the most unfashionable way. Falling forward waiting for the impact only to feel the now familiar arms that shouldn’t be recognizable, wrapped around her waist carefully. Once gaining composure she stood back up on her own. Giving her a questioning look as he raised an eyebrow at her wondering what she was doing running after him, she lifted up her hand. “Uhhh, you want a fist pump?..” “No! I’m saying lay out your hand.” Suspicious, but still he followed her instructions. A small clanging noise sounded as she lay out the item she grabbed from her jacket into his palm. “Ahh so you do like me” He teased as he dangled the keys in front of Mirai’s face. “No” “Oh really? Why give me your house keys then?” “I simply would like to lock my door while your out as to prevent any more suspected murderers from entering my home.” She whispered, careful as to not let the last part of her sentence be heard by anyone but them two. “Right, because you’d considering just letting one of them live with you, because that is the rational thing to do.” He grinned as he mocked the girl. “Yes, yes that is the rational thing to do! Just shut up and go get your damn strawberry item quickly before anyone see’s you!” She scolded as stomped back into her apartment, making sure to lock her door of course. Little did she know she left a smiling Ryo in the hall chuckling to himself about how cute she was.

Mirai groaned and sort of squealed at the same time as she sat in her bathtub, rubbing her face and thinking about everything that was happening. This was all so freaking wrong! She was a detective for christ sake! She should be hauling his, perfectly wonderful looking ass in to the station and questioning him! Gosh darn it! What was the matter with her. She let her hands come down to her cheeks for a moment. "There's just something about the guy." she told her herself as she stared off into  space for a moment, thinking about him. He really was different. .  . her phone rang making her jump and stumble out of her bath tub, scrambling around for a towel as she ran into her room. "Hello?"

"Hello, Detective Shida?" the male voice on the other end said.

"Yes this is she." She wrapped her towel around herself, trying to stop the cold air from coming in.

"Hi, this is Detective Morimoto Ryutaro from (insert Japanese place i don't know here) District. I was told to call you." Mirai struggled with her towel, it was not cooperating.

"Me? Why?"

"You're the lead detective of the Rose Murders am I right?"

"Yeah."

"Well, we found a body in our jurisdiction." Mirai froze..."The victims has no more than 30 minutes dead" Mirai's heart stopped in her heart. Ryo had only been gone forty minutes. Which means...

"I'm on my way."

"You Detective Morimoto?" Mirai asked as she walked into the scene, the man that greeted her was probably about three years younger than her and definitely her junior in the field, though how he become at detective with merely 20 years of age she had no idea. The guy had to be a genius.

"Yes." He said as he came up to her and shook her hand. His hair a short black mess. He although younger, was taller.

"I'm Detective Shida, and this is my partner Detective Chinen." She said as Det. Morimoto guided them to the body. Kutsuna Shiori 24 years of age, also stabbed multiple times although for some reason Mirai noted as she bent down to inspect the body, this seemed messy and rushed.

"Someone interrupted him." Morimoto informed as he recognized the confusion in her eyes.

"You mean someone saw him?"

"No, they just interrupted him, Ms. Kutsuna died here moments later, she was still alive when he left. The eye witness" he pointed to a woman whose make-up was running from the tears. "Said he bolted out the back window." Chinen made a light clicking sound with his teeth.

"Damn, she didn't get a look at him?" Morimoto shook his head.

"All she said was that he was wearing a black hoodie." Mirai closed her eyes, shit. That was the same thing Ryo had been wearing.

"Why the heck did he attack in broad daylight?!" Chinen asked as he looked down to Mirai who was now rising up.

"That a good question, and he didn't even have time to leave the rose." Mirai exhaled. "Do we know anything about this woman?"

"All we got is that she's a teacher."

"Usually the women he attacks are hostess. What's different here? Where's the connection." This all seemed so odd. Why would Ryo attack a woman in broad daylight? and if he wanted to attack a woman why come all the way over here to (insert Japanese district here) instead of just attacking her?! Something didn't add up.

“What do you think Mirai?” Chinen asked as he stared down at the body.

“Theres always the possibility that it wasn’t him. There must be some kind of reason for the Rose murderer to kill hostess, but to suddenly change his habits. Moreover take the chance of killing in broad daylight, thats careless.” Nodding as Chinen understood what his partner was getting to he leaned down and got a better look at everything as he took some pictures of the scene.

“Pardon me, but are you suggesting that we have our information mixed up?” Morimoto said as he stared at her in shock. Who was this girl to act all high and mighty leaving the decisions up to her.

“No, I never said it was mixed up, nor have I said your assumptions are incorrect. However I just find it all too odd.” Mirai had no idea what came over her, after all it was quite likely that it was Ryo. Something in her just couldn’t let that be though, it just can’t be him. He joked with her, he teased her, he talked with her. Yes the man may be quite an annoyance and he was most definitely odd, but something just told her it wasn’t him.

“I see, maybe we should all head back and think about it thoroughly tonight and come back, say the day after tomorrow?” Dept. Morimoto suggested as he started to cover the body once more.

“I think that is a perfect idea, we all need some time to think this through. That and if I’m home late again my wife is going to kill me.” Chinen jokingly said. Both nodding in agreement Chinen and Mirai headed out first. “Is it that odd though?” Chinen asked as the two walked out the building together. “About the situation? Maybe I’m over thinking things, but I have a feeling something isn’t making any sense. It’s like its a puzzle piece that has a couple pieces missing and instead has a different puzzle’s pieces forcefully attached into it.”

"No I'm getting the same feeling. Like why? What's his reason for attacking hostess and now attacking a teacher? Where is the connection? Not to mention the Rose. . ." Mirai stopped dead in her tracks. Her eyes starring out before her, Chinen stopped and stared at her.

"What? What about the rose?"

"The Rose. . . it's...right there." She pointed to the street, where a single red rose, with a black bow tied to it, laid untouched and undisturbed. Chine and Mirai both approached it.

"Why is it all the way over here?" Chinen asked as he signaled someone over from the crime scene to put markers and document the area.

"I don't know. . ." Mirai whispered.

"Okaeri." Ryo's voice called as Mirai opened the door to her apartment and walked in. He was oh so carelessly spread across her couch watching tv. Mirai didn't say anything she just watched him. A strawberry short cake half eaten on the table, he was clearly not done with it since he reached out to continue enjoying his sweet.

"Tadaima" She said slowly and that caught his attention, almost like he could tell something was off.

"Whats wrong?" He asked as he sat up and watched as she made her way to the couch across from him and sat down. She was silent a moment as she stared at him. No longer was he wearing the black hoodie, now he wore a light blue shirt.

"Where did you get the shirt?" She asked him, he looked down.

"I passed by an old friends house, She was saving some of my stuff for me."

"What friend?" he raised an eyebrow.

"Why are you asking?"

"Weren't you just supposed to go for something with strawberries? What's with the detour?" It bugged him, it really did. The way her voice accused him of something, though of what he didn't know.

"I got a damn cake, jesus Mirai what are you getting at? Why are you pointing a finger at me?" he asked standing up a little pissed.

"I haven't accused you of anything!" she retaliated and stood just the same.

“You damn freaking are! I have every right to know whats going on!” His voice rose back at her. “HOW COULD YOU?! AN INNOCENT GIRL RYO AN INNOCENT WOMEN! I GET CALLED TO WORK FOR A MURDER CASE JUST IN TIME FOR WHEN YOU GO TO GET A FREAKING ASS CAKE!” Her words came out sharp and piercing, so that was how it was. She was worried, she was scared. Her tears were already flowing as she stood there not even close to done yelling at him. The tears and coughs she was chocking on were preventing the girl to continue yelling at all though. It bothered him to watch her stand there and cry as she started to curl up into a ball on the floor. He stood there staring at her, eyes full of sympathy and regret for yelling at her.

Taking a step, then another, and another until he was right in front of her ball like stature. He contemplated in his mind, should he? After all he was technically the cause of her crying...he had made her worry about him. Would she even want to be near him though? Near someone who has every possible aspect that matched to the murder? The ball in front of him let out a small gasp from trying to take in air as she cried which snapped the man out of his debate within his head, which was a total mess at the moment. He leaned down to her level, keeping his voice soft he spoke.

“Mirai, it’s okay. Shhh shhh it’s okay.” His words however just made her move further away from him, moving her body backwards away from Ryo. Before the said ball hit the wall he grabbed her arm in one swift movement and had her in his arms. Struggling and gasping for air as she cried in his arms hitting his chest he sat there and let her hit him, abuse him. He sat there with his arms wrapped around her and his face buried in her hair.

Mirai cried, for a long, long time. At first she had tried to convince herself that she was crying because she was scared of the man that was currently holding her. That she was scared for her life because at any given moment he could kill her, however; it was long before she stopped trying to convince herself that she was scared of him and let herself admit that she was scared for him. When she felt herself calm down she couldn't bring herself to pull away from him. Finding that the tender touch of his embrace brought with it a warmth she could not imagine a coldblooded killer to have.

"I'm sorry." He said to her, once he head the sobs subside. "I didn't mean to worry you. But I was honestly just getting cake."

"And a shirt."

"And a shirt" Ryosuke said with a smile. Mirai pulled away slowly.

"Is that all you did?" she didn't want to be inquisitive but she had too, she had to clear him of this murder, in her heart she had too. Ryosuke made a face before shaking his head.

"My friend she..." Ryosuke sighed. He let go of Mirai and stood, pacing. This wasn't going to make him sound good he could already tell. "She asked me to drop some papers off at a friend of her's house. She's seven months pregnant, she can hardly leave the house without her husband freaking out." He began to explain. Mirai was silent. "I didn't know this girl, I was just given an address and some planning papers, the girl was a teacher she had asked Nao for some help."

"Teacher?" Mirai repeated.

"Yeah some Elementary school Teacher. I dunno I've never seen her before. Right after that I came straight here." Mirai stared at him. "I promise I didn't kill anyone." But the look on Mirai's face told him that his story didn't help him at all. "What?"

"What. . .What was the teachers name?" Ryosuke shrugged.

"I don't know..Ku-something...AH!" Ryosuke began to search his pants until he pulled out a little piece of paper. "Here, this is where Nao told me to go." he handed the paper to Mirai. "The woman's name is on there." Mirai looked at Ryosuke, then down a the paper, she opened it and made a very defeated face when she read the name.

"Kutsuna Shiori."

"Yeah her. She was really nice too."

"Ryo. . ." Mirai exhaled as she stood. "This is name of the woman. . .who was murdered."

Ryosuke didn't move. He didn't really seem to react really. At least not at first, then Mirai watched a cold fear enter his eyes, but it wasn't a fear that he had been caught red handed. No this was the type of fear that would invade a person who was literally terrified for their life or the life of someone they loved. Ryosuke began to search frantically through his pockets, but when what he was looking for wasn't found he began to search the couch.

"What are you doing?!" Mirai asked as she watched him half confused half annoyed. When he pulled out a cellphone he quickly pressed the redial button and brought the phone to his ears, hands shaking. Mirai watched him, curious as to who he was calling.

"Where are you?" His voice trembled as he spoke into the phone. "Damn it where are you?!" he barked out. "is your husband home." Oh...he was calling his friend, the Pregnant one what was her name. . .Nao...Pregnant.

"Oh my god" Mirai said to herself as she watched Ryosuke. He...he was talking to-

"Where is your husband?!" Ryosuke barked. "Pass the phone to him." Mirai watched as the man in her living room paced. "Hi, its me." the man on the other line said something. "Shut up, look I know we never talk and I don't really know you, but your wife is in danger." Mirai reached out and put the phone on speaker needing to confirm what she already knew.

"What the hell do you mean she's in danger?!" Chinen's voice called from the other line and Mirai's eyes grew wider in shock. Ryosuke gave Mirai a weird look but continued to talk.

"Shut the hell up and pay close attention. Naomi is being targeted OK, I don't care what you do but you make sure she's safe! YOU MAKE SURE SHE IS SAFE!"

"Ryosuke what's going on?" Chinen asked and Ryosuke exhaled, he looked at Mirai before speaking.

"You just trust me, you keep Naomi safe." Was the last thing he said before he hung up and turned off his phone.

"That girl wasn't his target." Ryosuke said as he looked at Mirai, anger rose in him. "It was Naomi."

"How the hell do you know Naomi?"

"She's a long time friend, someone very important and precious to me." He rubbed his face. "Shit, I should have known."

"You. . .You know who he is." Ryosuke didn't say anything but Mirai could tell by the way his silence filled the room that Ryosuke knew so much, much more than he was letting on but he wasn't about to speak anytime soon
