here. I think it's still kind of cute, and it's the only bit of my old fanfic that didn't get deleted. Meeemmoorrriieess.
Golden eyes followed him. He could feel them burning into his back as he dressed. He said nothing though, unwilling to be the one to break the silence. He fastened the last button on the crisp white shirt. In the mirror, he could vaguely make out the form lying in the bed behind him. The street light outside the window cast shadows across the room, echoing his thoughts.
“Do you really have to go?”
He just nodded. He didn’t trust his voice completely. The watch on the dresser was slipped into his pocket. He stared as his reflection, knowing that the longer he delayed the harder it would be.
The springs creaked behind him. He closed his eyes as he was gently encircled by arms. A warm cheek was pressed against his back. Silently, he laid his hand on the bare automail arm.
“I wish you could stay,” Edward whispered, voice slightly muffled by his shirt.
Slowly he turned around, looking down into the upturned face. He raised one hand and carefully brushed a stray lock of blonde hair from the somber eyes. “I wish I could, Edward,” he murmured, running a single finger down his lover’s cheek. “You know I’d give anything . . .” He had to stop as his voice faltered.
A cold metal hand closed around his wrist. Unshed tears shone in the eyes that looked up at him. “Look, I don’t want to get all sappy and shit. But if you get yourself killed I’ll never forgive you.”
A small smile crossed his face. “I’ll keep that in mind.” He leaned forward, lips meeting those of the younger man gently. Edward leaned into him, the blanket he had wrapped around himself falling to the floor. For just a moment, he could almost pretend that there wasn’t a car waiting outside for him. That he wasn’t on his way to the front of a war. Moments always end though, and he felt a tear slide down his cheek as he moved back.
“Please be safe,” Edward whispered, still clinging tightly to him.
He nodded again, swallowing past the lump in his throat. “Hopefully this will end quickly.” His fingers tightened convulsively. He forced them to relax and ran them through the golden hair. Less than three months, please. Before Edward’s birthday. Before they can send him.
On a vague idea, he removed one of the chains from around his neck, looking at it for a moment in the faint light. He leaned forward, kissing Edward’s forehead softly, then slipped the chain over his head. The cold metal lay cross his bare chest, glinting in the light.
Edward fingered the tag for a moment. “Won’t this get you in trouble?”
He just shrugged. “I’ll say the chain broke.” He pulled the shorter figure closer, stealing one last kiss. “I’ll see you soon.”
“Three months at the most.”
It was hard, but he managed to make himself let go and walk out the door.
Edward curled back into the covers after he heard the car pull away, breathing in deeply. The pillow still smelled strongly of him. He didn’t want to think about a day when it wouldn’t. The sun was starting to peek over the horizon as he stared at the tag he still clutched in his hand. He ran his finger tip across the letters of Roy’s name and tried hard not to cry.
