What a superbly crafted piece of literature. What an enthralling epic! I opened its cover anticipating a fictional journal of self discovery and perhaps a love story. I found, instead, a sweeping epic of the richest detail, beginning in Turkey and migrating to Detroit. Preformation, "prenatal omniscience," war and refuge from war, incest... I like how the entirety of the story is contained within the narrator's family. I like the hot and heavy chapter of Cal's (Calliope's, at the time) puberty. I don't know what to say about the story, other than I was deeply absorbed and I wish that more books grabbed me like this one did.
