Mother Night ~ Kurt Vonnegut

This black satire, about a Nazi double-agent wanted for war crimes in several countries, was one of the sweetest and most beautiful stories I've ever read. The plot is genius. It open with a foreword by Vonnegut describing the well-known Nazi propagandist whose autobiography he translates from the original German, much like "The Customs House" preface to The Scarlet Letter. The fictional Howard W. Campbell, Jr. was recruited by American intelligence to pass encoded messages to the USA by means of thousands of widely broadcast anti-Semitic speeches. Campbell has no real allegiance to either side, however, pledging his loyalty only to The Nation of Two - the love between him and his wife. As usual, everything Vonnegut has to say about love and sex is right on target.
