So I was following
this thread on RFD to get an idea of Wii availability in the GTA and there was a high probability that on Friday more units would be available for sale. Since they're so hard to come by, I decided to go to Best Buy early on Friday. I arrived at the Richmond Hill store at around 6:15 in the morning and there was already a small group there. As I walked closer to the store, I was told that I had to sign in and was asked whether I wanted a PS3 or a Wii (can only pick one). There was only 1 PS3 left and it was the 20GB one. Hmm well, I really came for a Wii, so I signed in for that and was number 24 in line. They had said that there were 35 units available, so I got there at the right time. A little bit later, a Best Buy rep arrived and we were told that there were actually 37. By around 7:30am, the line had received its 37th person but the group continued to grow. As 10am neared, the group had swelled to well over 100 people despite the fact that most of the newcomers knew there were only 37 units. I noticed this one person a few places behind me walk to the front of the line every 5 minutes and was counting the number of people. I found out that this was the 37th person haha, so he wanted to make sure nobody was cutting in front of him :-P. About an hour before the store opened, this guy and 2 of his buddies wandered into the parking lot with a 20GB PS3, trying to sell it to people in line. I didn't talk to him, but I overheard that he wanted $800 for it. Not bad, but nobody wanted it. When the Best Buy rep came out to hand tickets, he shooed them away.
When we were finally allowed to go into the store after almost 4 hours of waiting (well, for me at least), one of the employees asked me what else I wanted to get and kept trying to sell the extended warranty to me. I didn't bite, and this
report from a local Toronto news station explains why. So far the Wii has been pretty fun, but I almost let the Wiimote slip out of my hands a few times while playing Tennis. I'd hate to end up destroying my TV or the door to the balcony :-O
