Mmm... Food...

So after having a pretty bad week, I wanted to relax a bit on the weekend and take it easy. What better way to do that than to spend some time with a few friends and chat for a while? It had been a while since the last time we all gathered at somebody's house for the night, so I offered up my place on Saturday night for dinner. I thought about cooking for everybody like last time during the summer, but I really didn't have any idea of what to prepare, so I decided to make it a potluck. For those who haven't been to my place, I'm kind of lacking some essential furniture... like a table to eat on. On Friday, I went out looking for a folding table that was long enough for 8 people, and so I stopped by Staples after work. We saw one that looked pretty good, but then suddenly the power went out. It still didn't come back on after a few minutes, so the staff told everybody to go outside. When we went outside, we noticed that First Markham Place was also out of power and that some of the traffic lights weren't working. Hmm, guess I wouldn't be buying anything at this location. I wound up just going to the Staples close to my place and got a 60" folding table.

On Saturday, I went to pick up a few more supplies like a tablecloth, snacks, and paper cups. I still hadn't decided on what to make by the time the afternoon rolled around. Do I make pot stickers? 잡채? 갈비? Steaks? Fried rice? Before I knew it, Mich and Jeff arrived. They couldn't stay for dinner since they were attending a friend's performance at a church, but they stopped by since the church they were going to was around the corner. Whenever first time visitors see my place, I feel a bit embarrassed since my walls are empty and it's a total bachelor pad (ie. TV and sofa.) Actually, it didn't look too bad since I had the dinner table set up. I gave the usual tour of my condo and showed them the bathroom with two entrances so that I could suddenly burst in on my guests (kidding). A short while later, my other guests started arriving.

I guess I didn't really realize how my place is arranged for single living. For instance, my rice cooker. It's one of those really small models so we had to cook two batches of rice in order to make enough. I was starting to run out of bowls to serve food in, so we used my humongous mug from Second Cup. By the time we got all the food ready, it was time to eat. So what kind of food did I end up making? Pizza and wings from Wing Machine. After eating we just sat around for a while and chatted, and also went through my Chinese textbook and laughed at the chapter on swearing and vulgarities. We watched Brokeback Mountain, but most people seemed interested in fast forwarding directly to the "action" scenes. After that it was a Tetris competition and then we moved to playing cards. The game of choice was a variation of Slapjack (pictured on the right). I didn't even know it was called that... Mike told me the name in Chinese which I already forgot. It translated to something like put the blanket on some shit. We started playing on the table but then it got super loud with all the slamming of hands, so we moved it to the carpet but I think it made no difference in the end with all the screaming and yelling :-P. Everybody left by around 1:30am, and boy was my place a mess. I don't mean smashed dishes and food on the ground, but just dishes to clean up and food to put away. I'm sure glad that I started using my dishwasher this year. Now that I've started using it, I think it's like so convenient and it probably saves me water in the end since I run a load through it maybe once a week. Anyways, I was feeling really tired so I just went straight to bed and left the cleaning for the next day.

The next day I woke up and looked for something to eat for breakfast. I saw all the food that was left in my fridge and I started eating some of it. So for breakfast that morning, I had pizza and potato chips. With coffee. I guess it's all part of a balanced breakfast eh?

Cheers!
