Music, mon amour

An example of one of the very few times I enjoy my job: I just had a lengthy discussion about New Order with a student while we were transferring his files from one laptop to another. How supremely cool is it to talk about New Order, Joy Division, Kraftwerk, and other ancient bands with a 20-year-old kid guy who really digs this music? (He is a ( Read more... )

Hee. V. cool. Last week, I went to the good-bye happy hour for a customer service gal who found a new job after finding out that her drunken binges at last year's BEA barred her from attending this year's (in NYC, actually). Two of my immediate coworkers and I ended up next to one of the warehouse guys, one who's at least in his late 30s, but looks more fifty-ish (I think there's some hard living in his past). He mentions that he's into "dark music" like Mayhem and the Damned, probably expecting that we were not aware of them. He starts to talk about the former, about how they're a Swedish death metal band, and I remember reading about the murders within the band over who was more evil. (Surprise one!) He continued on to the Damned, at which point I started to laugh a little, because only the previous week, I'd ripped a copy of Phantasmagoria from one of the other people at the table. (Surprise two!)

Rather entertaining. Now he knows we are darque ppl. ;P

Swedish death metal, eh? Can't say I've heard of Mayhem, but then, I'm old, heh. It's great to have co-workers to swap music with; I'm envious that you can do it. But, I manage to plunder the mp3 files of some of the cooler students when I work on thier laptops, so I can't complain. The other day I got a big pile o' Pixies, White Stripes, and Cure, woo-hoo.

How are you liking the Gothic Archies, by the way? I'm a big fan of Stephin Merritt, and hate to admit that the Archies is my least-listened-to Merritt project. Must dig it out of whichever pile of CDs it's languishing in.
