Lost

Season 2 of Lost finally arrived in the mail today, after we had already watched the first 11 episodes on abc.go.com (every episode is available for free in HD, which looks even better than iTunes, but it doesn't run on our older computer and you have to click a button after every commercial, which is absurd!). We'll probably re-sell the first two seasons on Half.com and watch the next two seasons online.

Lost can be very addictive because you want to know what will happen next, but some episodes aren't so hot, like "Fire + Water," which we just watched, in which Charlie goes crazy and tries to snatch up Clarie's baby so that he can baptize her. The writers seem to love taking a sympathetic character and then doing something with him or her that makes him un-sympathetic and vice versa. First you hate Ana Lucia becomes she's an angry dictator, then she is more understandable when you find out what happened during The Other 48 Hours, then she becomes un-sympathetic again when you find out that she murdered her attacker. Echo starts out as a brute who smashes the good guys, then he turns out to be awesome, then you find out he was a gang warlord. Jin starts out as an ass, then you find out what happened to him and you sympathize. There are other examples. Also, I hate Jack. He is always mad and the madder he gets, the more annoying and stupid he becomes.

I also don't like how the show drags things out and then sometimes when something is finally answered, it is a disappointment. For example, when they finally met "the others," I was let down. The shaggy pirate didn't really seem like the quasi-supernatural whispering animal-like others i was imagining. He was just this dirty old man and we learned practically nothing about who "the others" were. The hatch was another disappointment. I thought it was so cool at first, but then it was just a bunker with that stupid button. There are other examples. In spite of such flaws, the show can be quite gripping at times and is reminiscent of The X-Files with the intensity and suspense, the supernatural stuff, and the ongoing storyline. I fully expect us to finish all four seasons before the final season debuts next year.
