i just have to say...i don't think the joker putting his life at risk to convert dent was inconsistent. at many times throughout the movie he wanted batman to kill him. he laughed when he was pushed off the building. he definitely didn't appear to care much about dying--he only seemed displeased when he felt pain.

But he didn't seek out death either.

why was that seeking out death? he was seeking to convert him--death was just a possibility. he also sought after batman knowing that he could be killed. i thought that seemed consistent with him. when dent was going to flip a coin and possibly kill him, he seemed to think it was a great idea.

i actually wanted to point this out, too. i think joker's plot actually was to have batman or harvey dent kill him. he tells batman early on that in order to beat him, batman will have to break his one rule. i think he specifically designed the last scenario to provoke batman into killing him. either he sees one of the ferries blow up another and kills the joker as revenge or if the ferries don't blow one another up, he forces batman to kill him to stop him from detonating both of them. after all the other elaborate plans, he didn't have an escape scenario for this one which i think strongly implies that he thinks this will be the coup de grâce.
