Our Saturday

I thought that I would share a few pictures with you all. First, there is
panache62's new cat, whom I named Link. Her roommmate Laura was catsitting him, but the owners don't want him back, which is no surprise. They are apparently not cut out to be cat owners. Anyway, here he is in all his feline glory!

Isn't he cute?

He's a love.

"What'd you do?"

We did a fundraiser at B&N today for
panache62's work. If people turn in a green slip when they make their purchase, we get 15%. A bunch were given out beforehand to tutors and other people related to the program, but we don't know if any of them showed up at all. When we got there after two and a half hours when her co-worker was doing it, she said that she had only given out two of them! You see, we're not allowed to solicit them. You have to sit directly outside the store with them and people have to choose to take them from off the table. No one makes this choice. A lot of people will look at you, but very few will dare to actually take one. Sometimes even when we explained them to people and how we get money and they don't have to do anything, they still wouldn't take one! Granted, most B&N customers don't buy anything and we were only covering one entrance. Anyway, we quickly got desperate and started making signs that people could read that would briefly explain the situation. We used the word "FREE" a lot as well as the question, "Want to help needy kids for FREE?" as well as the sign "TAKE ONE". Sometimes we went away from the booth and observed it covertly, hoping that people would be more likely to go up and take one without fear of having to talk to a stranger or be solicited. We'd watch people read the signs, and then walk away without taking one. I'm afraid that people are just too jaded from solicitation to give anything like this a chance any more, and the word "free," as we know, is all but meaningless today. Anyway, here's a picture of the booth.

Pathetic, isn't it?
