Finally caught up on My Name Is Earl, The Office, and ER. Earl wasn't bad, though I didn't think it was the funniest episode ever. Joy and Darnell fighting over Classy Ass (ha!) and Victoria's Secret, and Catalina's "Excuse me, I am hot!" exchange with Philo were probably the highlights.
The Office, I of course loved. Phyllis is so cute! I will always love Phyllis no matter what, especially when she gets all giddy about girl talk. Hee. And then Kelly, innocently questioning Jan about her hookup with Michael and then winking at the camera! Bwah! I felt so sorry for poor Pam, and I loved that Jim immediately told her to go for it without even questioning her about it. Awww. They're so adorable.
I know a part of ER is naturally going to be about medical issues and how they affect people, but I just get a little put off when they have one of their Very Special Episodes. Don't get me wrong, they've all been very well done, but I guess I just feel that, more so than showcasing a medical issue, it's more about showing off. Like "Look who we can get to guest star!" Or "Look at how dramatic and heartbreaking we are - don't you think we deserve an Emmy?"
.....but having said that, the episode was very good. I was especially impressed with the flashbacks, because they incorporated the cast and it actually looked like they took place a few years ago. The attention to hair alone (especially Abby's!) was great. And James Woods did an amazing job.
I don't know, I guess I would have been a little more into it if Lennox was somebody we knew. We were beaten over the head with the fact that the ER staff knew him, but obviously, we ourselves have never seen him before. (Obviously - they can't get James Woods all the time). I know Chicago is a big city, but there are going to be people they see over and over. And it just makes me wish that, for the sake of stories like this, they really did have more "regulars". So then, when they decide to do an ALS story, we actually care more about the character who is suffering from it.
Not that it was hard to care about Nate......but to me, it would have been interesting to see this story from the start. I don't know, maybe it's not logistical. Maybe they wouldn't be able to find an actor who is only willing to show up once a year just so we can go "Hey, that's Lennox, they diagnosed him with ALS back in 1999." But to me, it would have a bigger impact to see him gradually getting worse over time, instead of just being told about it.
I'm not making a lot of sense. I know that they did "show" us his deterioration, but it was all crammed into the one episode. What I'm talking about is an ongoing story. It doesn't have to take over the show - and in fact, it shouldn't - but just a little thing that they bring up every now and again.
Anyway. Abby grated on me a little bit in this episode. I get that she cared about Nate and obviously, since he'd fought for her, she wanted to fight for him. But she was a little bit too over-the-top for me. Maybe if Nate had had nobody else, but he had Fran. She had been with him since the very beginning of this, and she knew his wishes. It was like Abby took it upon herself to "speak" for him without acknowledging that out of anyone, Fran would know best. And towards the end of the episode, it almost felt like Abby was fighting Fran for the sake of fighting her. Anything she said, Abby suggested the opposite. When Fran wanted to take Nate home and Abby once again fought her on it, I thought "You know, you fought for the tracheotomy and you got it. Now you're just pushing your luck."
Randomly - is there heat in the ER? Sam and her winter parka kept throwing me off. Maybe it's just easier when they're running in and out to bring in patients, I don't know, but it bugged me.
Next week: Carter's back! And on a helicopter, apparently. I thought he and Kem were in France. Unless he's just throwing his money around and planning on surprising everyone in the ER by landing on their roof, I'm not quite sure what's going on. Maybe he's off saving the world again or something. Poor Luka will be so jealous.
And I guess Vic hasn't actually left yet. Yay! I thought he had just disappeared into the unknown, as ER characters tend to do. Of course, it looks like he might end up getting a cap in his ass, so I probably shouldn't celebrate just yet.
