2. I'll respond by asking you five personal questions so I can get to know you better.
3. You should update your LJ with the answers to the questions.
4. You should include this explanation and offer to ask someone else in the post.
5. When others comment asking to be asked, you will ask them five questions.
1.) If you could move to another country to live, would you? And where would you go? Why?
I like the US, and I would miss the PNW terribly (I like the rainy weather) but I really really like the mode of life in Spain, and I would like to live for a while in Salamanca. It's a nice city and it doesn't feel quite as busy as Madrid.
Anything I would need is in walking distance of the teeny-tiny flat that I would have to live in, so I wouldn't have to pay for a car (or for gas!) and right now I think that's the best part. Other than the nightlife. I would miss the sea, though, and after a while the graffiti would get to me. Also, my accent is not great, I'm a slow-speaker even in English, and lolololol Spanish idioms, so for a while I would have fun playing the idiot American.
2.) You're going to the zoo. What animal are you there to see/want to see the most?
Snap! I actually went to the zoo the day this was asked. I was most interested in the emu, surprisingly, that guy was entertaining.
3.) If you were offered two jobs... One is a job you like with low pay and low benefits, and the other is one that pays a lot and has great benefits (but you don't like it), which would you pick?
This is actually a pretty likely choice! I am or will be an animator, likely of the 3D variety, so the higher paying job is probably for some studio out there that is pre-existing that needs people to make the games on the special features of kids' dvds. Great. Ceaseless hours spent making the pirate treasure hunt game based on blaster ball or uninspired point-and-click games (as opposed to inspired point-and-click? Oh right, Myst and children.)
The low paying job is probably me going out on my own, relying on the angel investor on high, and starting up my own studio. I wouldn't be able to pay myself or my employees very well or give us very good benefits--but it would be my personal dream realized, and at least I would be working all week, week after month after year, on a project that was dearest to my heart. I would take this risk, I would. I would pass over the other job and do this--I know I would, if I could, if I could make it happen.
4.) You walk out of your house in the morning, and there is a cat sitting there by your door. The cat talks to you. What do you do?
Prepare myself for high-flying, fantastic adventures with our whimsical and colorful cast of friends, and doing battle with our nefarious but ultimately repentant nemesis! Marvel at the wonders of modern pharmaceuticals.
5.) Why do you like Fire Emblem?
Big, long answer! I'll be concise. I like the novel-structure, and the characters it can support. Usually a novel lags at over ten characters, but a game gives a lot more story-telling freedom and FE does that very well by using optional scenes and stuff. Video games are a pretty versatile medium and FE is in general very well written. (It's unfortunate though that the one that I feel that had the strongest story of the "new" games, FE10, totally squandered that potential! And FE9 was little better, what with 33 cut supports. Including Tanith/Volke, I would love to see that. That is like Badass/Badass with an A support.)
I also like the variety of characters and histories, and some of those characters have much more depth than they would seem to have initially or challenge the mould of a particular character. I feel bad referencing the games that I know that Manna hasn't played, but Elincia is my favoritest female video game character ever . . . oh, except maybe L'Arachel, who I think is pretty surprisingly complex despite her fairly "shallow" personality. They're both good examples of the typical princess role being explored or inverted and expanded in new and different directions. (If only L'Arachel had been FE8's protagonist--that would be a totally different kind of game!)
There is a pretty good range of emotion too, from character that wouldn't be expected to have it. Obviously Raven would have a grudge against Hector, and Shinon to hate Ike, but they're pretty sour individuals and their shit gets boring after awhile--to me, it's a lot more interesting to see an even-tempered character like Lyn or a character that is defined by their open heart like Micaiah, express bitterness or even outright hate. It's not that interesting to see Ephraim just going about his business, waging war and such, as it is to see Eirika the pacifist coming to grips about the death of an enemy. Sometimes it's even pretty interesting to see the stereotype handled well, ex: Seth the steady and unwavering knight, who is actually a tough and observant sort of person.
As far as gameplay, FE is the only tactical RPG I play. I am actually a platformer/adventure girl--other than FE, I don't much like tactics games. So it's an oddball!
