Calling all guitarists

My not so ill spent youth was full of swiming/fencing/school/gaming/and geting naked with Lily. This left litle time for learning to play any instruments. Kinda my one regret, except that I really didn't have time for it. Enter the real world. Currently after work I go to my 'lil rented room in Baltimore and stare at the ceiling/watch shit TV. This is time I would rather be making music, but my wonderful synth/turntables/sequencers are back in DC. I was transporting gear back and forth every week trying to hone my virtually non-exsistent keyboard skillz, but it was starting to take its toll, and was annoying. You see my synth is like the soul mate of my computer, they love each other through the sweet language of MIDI. Last week I hung out at a co-workers after work and messed around with his guitar. IT KICKED MY ASS. I SUCK AT IT. AND I WANT MORE. SO long story short is I want my tiny room to have an electric guitar with amp and phones so I can rock the rocktronica. I know some of you play/used to play guitar and I was wondering if anyone had any sugestions for some good starter gear. Im not looking to spend too much, lest it dip into my slowly but surely growing vehicle fund. I went into guitar center today and actually went over to the non pro sound side. Kinda weird. I know virtually nothing about guitars, where as I know a shit ton about samplers, synths, turntables, mixers, preamps etc. Asthetically I like the Les Paul look over the stratocaster, but I really don't know shit about git-fiddles. por exemplo: I don't know what the fuck a "humbuck" is, I think its a type of thingy that picks up the vibrations of the strings and turns them into voltages. I seek advice from all those who were buying grunge pedals when I was buying Dungeons and Dragons books.
