Birthdayness & Ice Cream For All

Aug 06, 2011 13:59

Since it is my birthday today and I can do this sort of thing, I've been spamming the Twittergraph with my thoughts on Jeni's Splendid Ice Cream. It's got something of a reputation in the knitting world since TNNA meets in Columbus, OH every June, so some of you may have heard of it.

(When I first saw the pints in Whole Foods' freezer case, I didn't make the connection between that Jeni's and these imaginatively flavored, highly priced, local-product-bearing stickered containers of ice cream. In fact, I didn't figure it out until this last Tuesday. We here in the City of Entropy do not consider the capital of the state next door to be "local," not exactly.)

I'm . . . not blown away by it. It's decent enough ice cream, considering it's been sitting on the freezer shelf for a while. Maybe it was my selection of Bramble Berry Crisp that is throwing me off, maybe I should have gone with Salty Caramel, I don't know. Maybe I'm just a frozen custard girl at heart, and inherently look down my nose at anything that isn't Kopp's or Leon's. Jeni's is . . . ok. I appreciate that they make it with the freshest stuff they can, the most local stuff they can, and that it's all hand crafted. But it's probably best if it's something that you'd get for special occasions, maybe specifically for the flavor combinations.

(There's also the issue of the one flavor that I would be ALL OVER, if only Pennsylvania's restrictive alcohol laws would permit it in grocery stores - cherry lambic sorbet. Stupid Pennsylvania. Stupid prohibition. Stupid stupid stupid.)

Now, these. These I could get excited about. If I wanted a pretty pink princess, Marie-Antoinette-impersonating birthday party with fancy-ass ice cream sandwiches, I could do no better than a Jeni's Macaroon Multi Pack. Throw in some frilly drink parasols for my peach soda, and I would happily luxuriate in my own decadence.

As it is, I mostly have to make my own decadence. And I'm pretty ok with that.
(Read: DO NOT TAKE ME TO DINING ESTABLISHMENTS FOR SPECIAL OCCASIONS; BUY ME COOKING UTENSILS INSTEAD. In this case, BUY ME AN ICE CREAM MACHINE.)

(By the by, Jeni's also ships, well I don't know about world wide, but definitely within the continental United States. The catch is: you have to buy four pints for your order. That is definitely decadence. Verging on opulence, even. Ice cream by post!)
