Last Day in Japan

Zaku lay on his bed, quietly in the darkness. Nothing moved and nothing was heard besides the heavy breathing of the large white dog that lay by his bedside. Zaku didn't turn to look at Karin as he tried to be strong, but tears streamed down his cheeks as well. Before he could get out the window, he muttered, "I love you, too... and don't worry, I will never forget..." Not thinking about the pains and strains on his body, Zaku quickly moved himself through the window and into the yard, too afraid to even look back at the girl inside the room. If he looked at her, he knew there was no way he would be able to leave...

Slow, steady steps took Karin to the vacant window and she watched Zaku disappear from the yard completely, and then... out of her life. Everything went blank and Karin fell to her knees at the window, one arm desperately hanging out, and she flooded her room with the tears. Her loud sobs filled the room to the point where even Shugo's barking and the loud bangs on her bedroom door could no longer be heard.

Eventually, the tears would stop. Eventually, she'd open the door and explain everything to her mother who had eventually grown concern over the once unstable daughter locked in her room. Eventually, the day would continue on as if nothing had happened at all. But for now, Karin resigned herself to the silent prayer that Zaku would be safe and healthy... and come back to her soon.
