Of Becoming Root and Other Nifty Things
Well, after 15 years in various IT positions, I have had to root my first box in order to complete a task.
You know, it sounds kind of dirty when I phrase it like that.
I've had plenty of computers where I've had administrative privileges, plenty of machines where I've had to go well beyond what a normal user would need to do, but I've never actually typed the command sudo, nor gone digging around with the intent to really delve deeply into the root privileges. I'm not counting use of MS DOS here, where everyone is root and no passwords are required.
Anyway, that's mostly a sidebar.
I am spending most of my time recently on three primary things: Work Part I (as in $DAYJOB$), Work Part II (as in The Magical Druid), and 3CG (particularly Pagan Fire Seminars).

- Work Part I: This goes well, but it's been pretty non-stop recently. I have a lot of projects, which is good because no one ever wants to find themselves short on work at their job, and those projects are leading to amazing things (I got a major vendor everyone hates dealing with to buckle on something, deferred over a million dollars until next fiscal year, and have found ways promote myself and my position for the benefit of my organization). Still, I find myself wishing for a bit of down time (or at least a couple of days without meetings so I can do the things that keep the lights on).
- Work Part II: seamus_mcnasty and I have invested in a fairly large piece of equipment, and we're expecting delivery of that piece soon. We have a computer that can build the designs we need and business is moving pretty well. We're sending out orders about 2-3 times per week on average, I think, which is pretty good, to folks as far away as Germany and Italy, and as close as "We see you at every Crane-thing!" The hope is that we'll find a broader market in the very near future, and we're already looking at another piece of equipment to expand our work in the next few weeks.
- 3CG: I had a disk failure that I was afraid had wiped out some of the key documentation for the Pagan Fire Seminars, but that resolved itself thanks to seamus_mcnasty asking me to send stuff to him about a week or two ago: all the key items were saved, though we did still lose some things that I'd like to have back. Still, things are moving on that front, and I think we'll have a very nice seminar for our first one, and then we can make a determination on whether we do more going forward. I think it's possible that we will, right now :) I'm looking forward to PFS on two fronts: 1) I think it'll be pretty awesome and will go very well, and 2) I am looking forward to having a successful little seminar behind me instead of in front of me. :)
