Really, just an open thank-you note

Today, I got a notification that someone (anonymously) purchased me a permanent account with LiveJournal. I'd like to say "Thank You" to that person (I am, of course, assuming that said person actually reads my LJ).

Apparently, LiveJournal donates $25 of any payment for a permanent account to one of four charities, and I got to make the choice about which charity my permanent account would support. My choices were actually pretty varied, given that I only got 4 choices. Options included free speech and privacy, sexual assault, creative commons, and human rights.

I mean, how can one go wrong, really?

My choice, after looking at the options, was pretty obvious to me, though. While each charity is certainly worthwhile, and I was tempted to just let "my" donation split evenly four ways, I settled on one above the others:
RAINN: The Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network is the nation's largest anti-sexual assault organization. RAINN operates the National Sexual Assault Hotline and carries out programs to prevent sexual assault, help victims and ensure that rapists are brought to justice.

Over the past few years in particular, I've had a lot of contact with survivors of various forms of sexual assault, and since becoming clergy, that role has grown a lot.

When I saw this option, then, I thought about what I'm doing with this journal, my life, and everything else, and it was this charity that I felt was most useful and important. It's not so much that the cause is the one that appeals most to me: the Creative Commons actually is more "me" than the others, as I define myself. But this charity, I think, fits best with my journal and my life as I'm living it now.

There are a lot of times that I don't know how to help. This just gave me the chance to do something positive that related well to me.

So, to whomever donated the account, I say again: thank you, and now you know how I've used the donation, and why.

lj, clergy, friends
