Excellent essay! I especially like your emphasis on thinking about the Nine Virtues & how they apply to the situation. The only thing I notice isn't really covered is illicit substances, which is a dicey issue on many levels.

I hope this is for the GOH. If not, it ought to be there.

It is. I believe it's the last essay we need.

I didn't want to cover illicit substances for the most part. I see that as a generally personal issue, and, really, if I address it, then right there, pow! Proof that we have users and abusers in ADF. Damn annoying, that.

Besides, moderation covers it well.

I could- although you might want to add something about "those who chose not to indulge for whatever reason" rather than focusing on those in recovery. Recovery's a good thing to mention, but some folks just don't drink because they don't want to (and when it comes to other things, then it's even more likely that they simply chose not to)

"It could", not "I could".

I think that a lot of the reason that it's so skewed towards drinking and alcohol abuse is that the original article (upon which this is based) in the GOH made a big deal about it, and I wanted to at least cover everything in the old article.

Plus, when you've been hit on by more drunk women than you can shake a stick at, it starts to stand out in your mind, I suppose.

But I will review the hospitality thing. You're very right about the vegetarians and diabetics.

Suppose I don't need to worry about Kosher, though, huh?

btw, I mention the virtues because, startling as it may be, they're only mentioned in the DP. They should really be used more throughout the organization. Harped on, even.

I agree comepletely. I'd *love* to see more emphasis placed on the Virtues overall. They *should* be a major force in our spiritual lives, really.

They've been a recent focus of mine in my artwork- the print stuff specifically (one of my entries to to the Artisan Comp at Wellspring was a Journal for the 9 Virtues I created for my Dedicant's program).

*everyone* seems to have a different interpretation of what they mean

That's true. But then, I'm not really suggesting that people stick with the 9 exclusively, just that it makes a logical starting point.

I also noted that it generally doesn't matter what you follow, so long as you stick to it. The Virtues are just what I think in, and they're kinda (but not really) "standard" among ADF members, or at least as "standard" as we're going to get.

Which would be why I *don't* see it as being particularly dogmatic- we've all got a different take on them. I've got a fun view of fertility, I think- I have no desire to reproduce (& would be horrified to find myself pregnant any time soon) but I believe very strongly in that virtue as part of the creative process.

Then again, I was raised Catholic, so my idea of dogmatic relates largely to having a Pope & such. We're not in danger of turning into that anytime soon.
