i found this online today:

The Literature & Culture of the American 1950s

i am obsessed with 1950s history. the 50's decade had so much wrong with it and yet people regard it as a such a great time in american history. i am very interested in the way in which americans have overlooked what really went on during that time; and our focus on the pop culture of the 50s. families model themselves after the quintessential "1950s" family, but in reality it wasn not what you see on tv. it it is like people have this rose-colored view of family life in the 50s. it wasn't like that! good job media and propaganda. sheesh. i think what fascinates me the most other than the dirty politics and the things you kinda have to dig for, is the presentation of families and of women. such as with the transition from the 40s into the 50s, culturally. what a switch! then again, every decade seems to have such dramatic differences during the 20th century. it doesn't seem so prevalent today, but then i look at the advances in technology and our own culture and i have to check myself.

this is my new obsession (again): read more about american culture in the 1950s. notably the dirtier bits. i think i re-visit this every couple years. what fed it was a book (i forget the title) i read in high school. then my curiosity grew when i took a class called "Classical Marxism" during my first semester in college. the professor told so many great stories about being communist and part of a communist group during the 1950s and 60s. talk about wow, what a trip. i wish i had his lectures on tape.
