Upcoming SF events I am tempted to attend, ganked from the Borderlands newsletter and SF in SF list:

SF in SF presents a special Steampunk event for LitQuake, with authors Kage Baker, Joe R. Lansdale, and Rudy Rucker, Thursday, October 9th at 7:30 pm at the Variety Preview Room in the Hobart Building, 582 Market Street. An evening celebrating all aspects of Steampunk - impossibly fantastic adventures you'll never forget. Steampunk is Victorian elegance paired with modern technology: steam-driven robots, souped-up stagecoaches, and space-faring dirigibles, all fueled by gaslight, romance, mad scientists, and oh-so-trim waistcoats. Cash bar, books for sale courtesy of Borderlands, and a good time for all. Doors open at 7:00 pm, and the event starts at 8:00 pm. We expect a large turnout for this event, and we'll try to accommodate everyone, but come early to ensure that you get a good seat. More info at http://www.litquake.org/the-festival.

LitQuake LitCrawl at Borderlands with special guests Richard Kadrey (BUTCHER BIRD), Ellen Klages (WHITE SANDS, RED MENACE), and Pat Murphy (THE WILD GIRLS). Saturday, October 11th from 8:30 pm - 9:30 pm. See http://www.litquake.org/the-festival/lit-crawl-2008 for the complete Litquake schedule.

Ann and Jeff Vandermeer, STEAMPUNK (Tachyon Publications, Trade Paperback, $14.95) Tuesday, November 4th at 7:00 pm - Borderlands is happy to welcome the editors of STEAMPUNK to the store! What exactly is Steampunk? Tachyon Publications says, "Steampunk is Victorian elegance and modern technology: steam-driven robots, souped-up stagecoaches, and space-faring dirigibles fueled by gaslight romance, mad scientists, and oh-so-trim waistcoats. It's "The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen," 10,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA, THE WIZARD OF OZ, and THE GOLDEN COMPASS. Replete with whimsical mechanical wonders and bold adventurers, this riveting [sic, says Phran] anthology lovingly collects classic steampunk stories, pop-culture fueled discussions of steampunk, and essential recommended reading lists for the discerning steampunk fan." Welcome Ann and Jeff for a rousing discussion and Q&A!

Cecelia Holland, Barry Malzberg, and Kim Stanley Robinson are guests of SF in SF Variety Preview Room in the Hobart Building, 582 Market Street, Saturday, October 18th at 7:00 pm.

The Singularity Summit - the premier dialog on the Singularity, Saturday, October 25th, Montgomery Theatre, San Jose, www.singularitysummit.com, inquiries 650.273.2771 / main@singularitysummit.com.
Featured speakers include author Vernor Vinge, noted authority on the Singularity, Peter Diamandis, founder/X Prize Foundation, and topics range from Web 3.0, neurotech, nanotech, robotics, and AI. Sure to be interesting - the first Singularity Summit was held at Stanford in 2006 to further understanding and discussion about the Singularity concept and the future of human technological progress. It was founded as a venue for leading thinkers to explore the subject, whether scientist, enthusiast, or skeptic. An extraordinary group of visionaries in business, science, technology, design, and the arts, come together in our community to explore this exciting topic. Your participation offers a world of powerful ideas, a unique networking opportunity, and access to an exclusive directory of your peers. Sponsored by the Long Now Foundation - learn more online at www.longnow.org/projects/seminars - discount attendance fee for members. [While the Singularity interests me not at all, this looks like an interesting forum to discuss new tech.]

Just keeping y'all updated.
