I'm in Baton Rouge right now -- the city of my birth and the city that I'll be moving to in two months. Graduate school is the force that's pulling me down here. I'll be pursuing a master's degree in library science with an archives specialization at LSU. So far, everything is falling into place perfectly. I've even received a graduate assistant position working at the University's archive. Just a few hours ago I drove past the rent house that I move into in August. Kinda difficult to get an impression in the dark, but it seems fine and is conveniently located about 2 miles north of campus. If only rent didn't cost twice as much in BR as in Shreveport! The reason for my current visit is to be interviewed in the morning for a scholarship. My fingers are crossed.
Making the four hour drive today was rough because of the near constant rain, not to mention the boredom of I-49. I think I'll start making my Shreveport-Baton Rouge trek on the old Highway 1, as was suggested to me today. Should be more scenic.
The trip was also tiring because Jackie and I just returned home on Tuesday night from five days in Austin. We had plenty of fun and did a number of things that were new to me -- night swimming at Barton Springs, visiting a peacock park, hiking, checking out the Harry Ransom Center, etc. However, it seemed like something was missing. All the good restaurants are still there as are the record stores that I habitually visit. I think I'm just missing all my old friends who've moved away.
Work at Centenary wraps up in 6 1/2 weeks. Then, I'll have about 4 weeks to tie up loose ends in Shreveport, hopefully conduct a blitzkrieg round of interviews and research on Shreveport music history, and move four hours south. School will start before I know it.
