Times New Viking in Denton, Texas (March 14, 2007)
Best recent news is receiving a letter from LSU with a nice financial aid offer! I would be a graduate assistant working 20 hours a week and receive a stipend and free tuition. “All contingent on my being accepted to the LSU graduate school” or something like that…hah. It seems some departments work faster than others. I’m not fretting it, though.
Last week was my fourth trip to SXSW, and in some ways it was the least exciting one I’ve attended. The fun moments of running from one show to another all day long to catch new bands or groups I really enjoy were replaced with feelings of “Uh, so, what next?” and “I think I’ll play 20 year old video games while this band plays.” I’m glad I went, and I caught some good shows, but overall it was more “blah” than I expected. I posted this to a message board the other day:

My SXSW report.
Best show was in Denton, Texas before SXSW: Wax Museums, Cheap Time, Clockcleaner, Times New Viking, Marked Men
Best SXSW show I attended: probably the one at Scoot Inn with Fucked Up, Jay Reatard, White Savage, High Tension Wires, Marked Men, Live Fast Die, Cheap Time, Wax Museums, Manikin, Die Rotzz, Carbonas, Brimstone Howl, plus a bunch more including some goofy metal band from Dallas wearing overalls and holding a 3 foot long joint (bonus points for one guy in the band working at the Southern Maid Donuts headquarters). Most awkward moment: Jay choking some jerk with his flying v.
Show with good potential and underwhelming payoff: house party with Spits and Black Lips at 4am.
Other bands in there somewhere: Mika Miko, Silver Jews, Gentleman Jesse, Daniel Johnston, Buzzcocks, King Louie. Eh, that's all I can remember.
Other rewarding moments: haning out with the Wax Museums all weekend long, talking to King Louie at Tamale House.

Thanks to that “underwhelming” house show, though, I did make it to the front page of the New York Times’s website yesterday. They did an 8 minute video story on the Black Lips, and there was footage from the house party. I’m standing by the front door looking sleepy.
