I've posted photos of the hawk that has visited our back yard a number of times. Randy and I have speculated that she might be after one of the many fat pigeons that have taken up residence here.

It finally happened. Randy came into my office to tell me that he heard the crows making a terrible racket, clearly upset about something. He went into the back yard and realized the crows were carrying on about something in the neighbor's yard. Our yard shares a side fence with the neighbor. I went outside with Randy to see what he had seen.

I peered between the slats and there was the hawk on the grass and a dead pigeon beneath her. A dozen or so crows were gathered in a tree nearby on watch. After a few minutes, the hawk took off with her prize.

Randy and realized the large number of bird-related phrases that are humorous when used to talk about birds. The crows are chicken. The pigeons are sitting ducks. And the crows watched their enemy like a hawk.
