I had a horrible, but not unusual experience as I drove home this evening around 7 on the 280. There was plenty of sunlight left, which enabled me to see, well ahead of me, an unfortunate doe that walked into the four-lane freeway. She wasn’t running and seemed to have no sense of the danger she was in. I’m always scanning the side of the road as I drive because I know the deer are around and there’s nothing to keep them from wandering onto the freeway the way this one did.

I immediately slowed down, but there was a white SUV in the next lane over. The doe had gotten into that second lane, so the SUV rather casually and without making any attempt to slow down, started moving into my lane.

The doe decided to reverse direction and bolt…right in front of the SUV. It threw her body into the air and she landed in a crumpled, dead heap on the side of the freeway while bits and pieces of the SUV scattered in front of me. The driver never once slowed down -- not before, during or after the incident. I felt sick and cried the rest of the way home. It’s bad enough to see the many wild creatures that are lying by the side of the freeway without having to see the moment of violent death itself.
