I received word around noon that my father, Elzer Marx, died peacefully and without pain at the VA hospital. He was 86. They'd made him as comfortable as possible with no IV or needles or tubes, just a morphine patch. Marge (his wife of 30+ years) was with him at the end.

I left work early and have been exchanging phone calls with the family to determine when I should fly back for the service, probably Sun. I grieve for losing him and am relieved that he's no longer suffering.

He was a dedicated athlete who played basketball, football, Minor League baseball, tennis and golf. He served in the Navy during WWII as a flight navigator. While I was growing up, he managed a radio station and was a sports broadcaster for Univ. of Ill. football games and other local sports games. Later in life, he sold real estate, but I don't think he ever liked it that much. I wish he could have stayed in radio. He had a sharp wit and gave me the smart ass gene in abundance. He also gave me his sense of ethics, justice, and responsibility.

He was a wonderful, loving, supportive father. I'll miss him deeply.
