Happenings

Hello everybody, it's time for my periodic "what's going on?" post!

I actually don't have much earth-shattering news to report. Life is good.

While I worked on Memorial Day, I did take last Thursday and Friday off, so I had a 4-day weekend. On Thursday I drove out to Crawford Notch and climbed Mt Eisenhower and Mt Pierce, as my previous blog post reveals. On the way home I had dinner with my friend Lisa in Gorham, then visited Martha for a bit.

On Friday, I slept in until 9, which was awesome, then did some errands while waiting for Martha to get out of work so we could drive out to North Conway, where we stayed until Saturday evening and crashed my mom's "girl's weekend" a bit (she was there with Karen, Denise, Rene, Lisa, Stacie, Katie, Allison, Anna, and the lone boy, Caleb). Friday involved a dinner at Flatbread, a drive up Pinkham Notch as far as the Mt Washington auto road, then a match of Mini Golf at Pirates Cove where I shot a 38, 6 under par (for the first time ever, I think).

On Saturday, after breakfast, we drove across the Kancamagus highway to Lincoln, then on to the Flume Gorge for a nice 2.1-mile nature walk, which took us to several waterfalls and things. It was nice.

On the way back across the Kancamagus, we stopped at Sabbaday falls and checked that out (all the pics are on Facebook, btw). Returning to Conway, we dropped by to visit my cousin Betsy at her weathervane shop, then did a small amount of outlet shopping. The only thing we bought were a few discount kitchen supplies (oven mits, soup crocks, etc).

The last thing we did before heading back was to have dinner at Moat Mountain with my mom's entourage, which was cool. For Martha, meeting my mom for the first time came with the catch that she also had to meet 9 more of my closest relatives :) I suppose this is slightly preferable to waiting until beach week, where the crowd would be even larger.

On Sunday, Peter Doyle and I went and climbed Pleasant Mountain. Yes, I know I said I was sick of this mountain, but he really wanted to go, wanted me to go with him, but as he's getting over a very nasty bout of sciatica which lasted the whole winter, I was happy to oblige. Needless to say I found it easy but it was still great to be outdoors. We did get stuck on top for awhile, taking shelter in the abandoned firewarden's cabin while it rained.

That night, Peter hosted a cookout to celebrate Katy Zore's birthday. Most but not all of the regulars were there. Notably missing were Shannon and Jack, who got married on Saturday and were thus on their honeymoon!

This weekend, I'm headed to Bangor by myself, and have a reservation at Katahdin Stream Falls campground (parking only), and intend to climb the Hunt Trail up Katahdin. I figure it will take about 6 hours or so, which should leave me enough time to return in time for the 2nd annual Homebrewfest at Bert and Amy's.

On tap this year are: Strawberry Rhubarb Ale, India Pale Ale, and Maibock. Something for everyone. I can't wait, and Saturday is shaping up to be an incredibly fun day for me.

Next Friday (June 5th) we're off to Montreal for the Mondial de la Biere 2009!

I love summer :)
