What is everybody listening to these days?

So yeah, it's no secret that I love my music. Passionately. I listen to it all day long, it makes long drives bearable, even enjoyable sometimes, and though I don't get to do it nearly often enough due to lack of interested company, there are few things I enjoy more than going to see live music. There are few genres that I can't find some enjoyment in, as long as it's backed by real talent, though naturally I gravitate towards certain genres more than others. Progressive rock, classic rock, acoustic rock, blues, and classical are what I listen to the most, in no particular order of preference.

Anyway, I just thought I'd post about what I've been listening to lately, and poll my readers for their own "what have I been listening to a lot lately" lists.

I've been on a local music kick lately. I went out and bought the entire "Greetings from Area Code 207" collection, except for Volume 3 which I haven't been able to find. In any case, my current list of favorite local acts consists of:

- Rustic Overtones
- Ray LaMontagne
- Pete Kilpatrick Band
- Dominic and the Lucid
- Howie Day (hope he gets a new album out sometime in my lifetime)
- Paranoid Social Club (when I'm in the mood for something a little grittier)
- As Fast As (when I'm in the mood for power pop, which isn't often, but "Something Feirce" is a great album)
- Jon Nolan

In the "random" category, I have to give Gina some credit for turning me onto some bands that I either wasn't previously interested in, or hadn't heard of. For example, John Mayer. All I'd heard was his sappy acoustic drivel, usually on the PA at the supermarket. From watching things like the hilarious Chapelle Show skit with him, I had at least a hint that he was a decent player, but I had no idea how good until I borrowed and listend to the album "Try" by the John Mayer Trio. Whoa! That dude can really wail when he wants to! I immediately went out and bought it.

Other stuff I've been getting into lately, on the "thanks to Gina" list, is The Killers (eagerly anticipating their new album on the 24th of this month) and Jon McLaughlin. She tried to turn me on to Teddy Geiger, but he's a bit too bubble gum for me. Maybe when he grows up a bit.

As for stuff I've been listening to for awhile, and haven't yet tired of (i.e. perennial favorites), the list won't surprise:

- Mark Knopfler
- Radiohead
- Muse
- BNL
- Dave Matthews Band
- U2
- Pink Floyd / David Gilmour solo stuff
- Jeff Buckley
- Stevie Ray Vaughan
- Jars of Clay (going to see them next month in fact)

And given that I recently fulfilled a long-standing wish of mine to own a truly great acoustic guitar, I've been accordingly listening to a lot of acoustic music. Notably:

- The absolutely amazing Phil Keaggy
- Eric Clapton Unplugged (man what a great album that's aged well!)
- Dave Matthews and Tim Reynolds
- David Gilmour's Meltdown Concert
- Leo Kottke
- Doyle Dykes

So anyway, I'm actually looking to hear from all of you here. What have you been listening to lately? Got any recommendations? I'm always looking for new stuff! Speak up!
