I feel very lucky, as I've not really had too much hardship during the whole affair. Aside from having to work an extra 6 hours on Friday, its been relatively ok for me. Campus didnt lose power, and I still had heat all weekend. Wish I could say the same for the majority of the rest of the city.
Large portions of the neighborhoods look like a warzone. It resembles a haphazard pruning job, only instead of shrubery, its trees. Every tree around has either lost a substantial number of branches or has split in two. All those pretty tree-lined tracks of houses are impassible gauntlets of jagged branches and delapidated foliage. The poorest areas got it the worst, especially University Heights by South Campus, which still has no power and many of the trees are still strewn across the road. They've thankfully taken care of the downed powerlines, but the tree devestation is still very evident. If I was a forestry person I think I'd have had a nervous breakdown by now, as its positively awful.
Power is still out to most parts of the area. They've thankfully got most of the traffic signals back up, so driving is a little less atrocious and accident prone. South Campus still has no power and they've basically evacuated the dorms down there. Likewise, heights residents have been crashing at places up here on campus. The Student Union has become a kind of relief shelter as well, though a lot of people have been moved from there over to the ellicot dorm lounges. No word as to how long it will take to restore power down there, but they've cancelled school for tomorrow, leading me to believe it may be a more difficult process than anticipated.
Apperantly our water is contaminated and might run out. We've had to boil all the drinking water and I'm running out of dishes because we can't use any of it for dishwater. The pump station lost power for awhile so its a couple days until it'll be 100% good again. Meanwhile, disposable silverware and non-cooked meals are all the rage. Today I did cook a decent meal, but thats about the 2nd time I've had a warm meal this weekend. The other was at Pearl St. downtown, which really wasnt that badly affected, when I went to watch the sabres there because I had no tv.
Its been an interesting few days. I ended up not fleeing for Rochester, and I'm glad I stayed, because I did manage to have a lot of fun this weekend despite the crisis. Its really been kind of bizarre, and I've honestly never seen anything like a lot of the things I've seen in the past few days. Definately a memorable event, though a terrible one.
I'll try to post some pictures I took. Not tonight though, because I've got a lot to do tomorrow.
cheers.
