[Share a Halloween memory]
“It’s right here, Daddy,” Isabel instructs as Phillip pulls the sedan into the trailer park. He parks the car where Isabel tells him to and she scrambles out of the backseat, dragging a paper shopping bag and a white sheet behind her. It’s getting pulled through the dirt a little and the heel on her ‘glass’ slipper catches on the broken step. She knocks lightly on the door, instinctively knowing that she has to be quiet here.
When Michael answers the door, he looks slightly panicked but Isabel brushes it away, smiling brilliantly up at him.
“We’re going trick or treating,” Isabel tells him. “I’m a princess and Max is a ghost.” She shoves the sheet at him. “I made you a ghost costume too and Mom and Dad says you can spend the night.”
“Is…I can’t,” he says, glancing back into the trailer lit only by the blue-glow of the television.
“Hank asleep?” Isabel asks. From the set of her jaw it’s already terribly obvious she’s not going to take no for an answer.
Michael nods and almost takes a step out the door, looking up to the car where Max, Phillip and Diane are waiting. “You sure it’s okay?”
Isabel nods in response, the smile on her face spreading. “Yeah. We’ll get lots of candy and then Mom and Dad will look at it to make sure it’s safe then we’ll get to stay up late and eat it while we watch The Great Pumpkin.”
“The Great Pumpkin?” Michael asks skeptically. It makes Isabel roll her eyes and she reaches out to grab his wrist.
“Just come on. There’ll be lots of candy,” she says as she tugs him toward the car. He goes reluctantly at first then more eagerly, tossing the sheet over his head on the way to the car. At least when it turns out miserable, no one will know who he is.
