[Only after disaster can we be resurrect- Tyler Durdan Fight Club]
She finds it odd how a piece of paper can make things so final. It’s just a piece of paper but it binds people together and it rips them apart with more power than something so fragile should have. She knows it’s the meaning in the paper, the authority behind the words written there but understanding something has never made it any easier for Isabel. She’s got an indestructible core and a hard outer shell but she still falls and she crumbles under the weight of a piece of paper.
When Max finds her, she’s sitting in the corner of the room, knees drawn up to her chest, tears cascading down her cheeks. Her eyes are red and puffy, her nose is stopped up and her body aches from the sobs that racked her body before. He feels her pain as if it is his own and he gets on the floor with her, gathering her into his arms. She doesn’t say anything but her arms go around him and she squeezes tightly, begging him to hold her just as tightly. He obliges, one hand trailing through her hair as he rocks her.
“I wanted him to want to stay,” Isabel finally says. “I wanted him to want to change his whole world for me and he didn’t. I wasn’t important enough.”
“He’s stupid, Is. If anything in this entire universe is worth changing for, it’s you. And if he can’t see that, he doesn’t deserve you,” Max tells her. He cups her face in his hands and kisses her forehead before pulling her back into his chest. She rests her head on his shoulder, content for the moment to exist here with her other half.
“You have to say that. Otherwise I get to vote you off the island,” she says, a small attempt at a joke.
“Just because I have to say it doesn’t make it any less true,” Max assures her. “Michael would tell you the same thing. You’re a princess. He never saw that.”
“I thought you revoked all that…King, Princess…the whole other life.”
Max half smiles and runs his hand down her back. “I revoked it. Doesn’t make it any less true.”
