Which is more true for you: Blood is thicker than water or My friends are the family I choose?
Most people don’t understand the three of them and how could they? Most people think they are simply human, three people who have spent so long together that they no longer know how to be apart. It’s more than that though. It goes all the way to their blood and back to a life they only remember in flashes and dreams. That life may be gone but the bonds are still there. No matter how many times Max ‘renounces’ his throne, he will still be their King. She will still be The Princess and Michael will always be the second in command. It’s a thread that weaves between them, unbreakable and invisible. It is one reason that Liz fits in. She understands that it will always be the three of them and the whole is bigger than the parts. In fact, sometimes, Isabel thinks Liz understands that better than Max does. Max fights against it because it’s so alien. She and Michael embrace it because it’s so alien and because buried deep inside they share a common fear of abandonment. People will leave and humans will let them down but they will never leave each other.
It’s not about fate or want or ‘supposed to’. It’s about need. It’s about spending every night for three years crying because the piece that is Michael was missing. It’s about knowing from across the room who he is, even though he has grown taller and harder. It’s about trust and trays of food slid across tables despite not knowing why. It’s about blood and it’s about not being human.
