The Library and Friday Five...

Aug 24, 2007 08:08

Yesterday was one of 'those days'. It seemed to be that way for everyone, not just me. Couldn't seem to get out of the house, couldn't seem to get it together. So I dropped Ry off and made it to the library on time. The assistant librarian didn't know i needed the projector. Sigh. No biggie. She also didn't know how to set it up. Double sigh. She said she was having one of those days too. Okay, so I got it all set up, no problem. It wasn't hard to figure out.

Almost 10:30, when I'm supposed to start, and there are only two boys, about ten or so, and their grandmom. They were visiting, and the weather was so cruddy they couldn't go to the shore. The one boy said he had read part of my first book. Said he found it in the library! He's from Pennsylvania, so I don't know which library, but that was cool. I'm all ready to just talk to three people, when in walks dozens of kids! A full room! That was the good part.

The bad part - they were from a pre-school. Now, the children's librarian had put on the ads for the event that it was best for ages 7 and up. Here I was with a room full of five year olds! Are you kidding me??? Well, there was a class of older kids, maybe seven or eight, mostly boys. So I had to do my school presentation with a bunch of giggling, wiggling kids who really had no interest in what I had to say. I made it fun, and we all had a good time, and the grandmom and her boys did enjoy it.

I didn't sell a single book. Not one. The school kids weren't prepared to buy books, obviously. .On the upside of that, the library pays me a pretty decent honorarium to talk for an hour, and the librarian was happy. I was too, it turned out okay. I have more appearances lined up this fall, so plenty of opportunity.

Okay, Friday Five. Five things that I want to find the inventor of and kiss them...

1) Swiffer. The person that invented the swiffer should be worshipped like a god. And the little duster things? Fuggetaboutit. No more finding a rag to dust that just throws the dust around. Swiffers in all their forms ROCK
2) BookMooch. What could be better than a big giant book swap meet?
3) Ebay. You can find anything on ebay, and that's just awesome
4) Crocs. What's better than brightly colored clogs made of rubber? My sister gave me a pair that were too big for her, and I love 'em. I'll wear 'em anywhere!
5)Off Bug lanterns. These things are terrific, and WAY better than spraying yourself with stinky, sticky spray. A couple of these and you can sit outside in bug-free comfort.

You all have a great weekend. Monday we'll see Kim Baccellia as she stops here on her Virtual Book Tour!
