We live in a tiny house. It has charm, it's a good little house, but there is not a ton of space. And no closets, which is a whole other issue. But I always seem to find some nook of usable space in it. We have lots of shelves, because floor space is at a premium. But Boy is getting bigger, and his friends like to come over. This usually means I have to find another place to be, because my workspace is in the same room as his toys, and if they play Wii, it's in the living room. We've talked about building a room in the attic, which is LARGE but unfinished, but it would be expensive. But if you moved all the stuff, you COULD put a whole bedroom up there. Or a nice smaller room, with a door to storage. Again, lots of work, lots of money.
The problem will only get worse, not better, as Boy gets older. So, I said yesterday, what if I moved upstairs? If I can get my table, writing stuff, sewing stuff all out of the shared sunroom, there will be much more room and Boy can spread out a bit. All we have to do is clear out the space I want - specifically the dormer space:
This is what it looked like yesterday before I cleaned. The shelves came with the house, and I wasn't sure about them, but once I got all this crap off of them, they are awesome and useful. I will enjoy keeping books and stuff on them. My dressmaker's dummy will look great up here too.
This will take less time, and less money, since we will only be putting down some plywood to cover the exposed ceiling joists beyond the wood floor, so we can move some of the junk under there, and some drywall near where I want to work, so I have a wall for my whiteboard. Some electrical work, so I can have power for light and computer. We haven't figured out how we're going to heat and cool it yet. And then I have to figure out if the wireless connection will reach that far, and if not, where I can move it to to make it work. But my phone works up there, so it might be all right.
This will be a long project, not something that happens right away. But I've taken the first steps by starting the great Attic Cleanout. Which I've wanted to do for awhile anyway. That space up there is useful and I hate that we're not using it. So now we will.
Maybe someday we'll finish the whole thing and build a cool Boy hangout, but for now, I'll take a writing loft of my own. I'll keep you updated as this project progresses.
