"Margaret said the hearings are over for today and they aren't questioning any more staff until after the holidays," Donna said as she poked her head inside Josh's office.
"Yeah," he said, nodding towards the muted television. "They just announced it. They'll be resuming in two weeks." He pursed his lips and brought his gaze to hers, studying her quietly for a moment before saying, "Are you, uh… I guess if you had a, um, date, you can still…" He stopped, at a loss for the proper words to ask her what he wanted to know.
She shook her head - almost imperceptibly - and smiled sadly. "My only date is with the redeye to Wisconsin. I'll be back Thursday morning." She came into the office and pulled his diary across the desk towards her. "I put a sticky on your calendar," she said, pulling off the yellow note and handing it to him.
He took it, staring at her familiar scrawl. He'd seen the note earlier, but he had been so preoccupied with the hearings and the bombings that he'd completely forgotten about it.
"Is that what this says?" he asked, trying to lighten the somber mood. "I almost called Senator Oroto bargaining support on HR65 in exchange for his vote on the agriculture bill."
She smiled wanly at him. "Well, it's a good thing you didn't."
"Yeah." He crumpled the scrap of paper in his hands. "You really should work on your penmanship there, Donnatella."
"I'll get right on it." She hovered by the door, obviously anxious to leave. "I should… I still have packing to do and -"
He waved her away. "Go. Wish your family a merry Christmas."
"You'll be okay?" she asked.
"Yeah, I've got -" He looked around his cluttered desk, looking for a convenient excuse and finding none. "I have an old college friend I might look up," he finally said, thinking of Amy.
She nodded, smiling just the slightest bit. "Okay."
He smiled back at her and she left, leaving him staring longingly at the empty doorway.
