Day 26 - OMG WTF? OR most irritating/awful/annoying book ending

My answer for this one is definitely Ian McEwan's Atonement. I really liked the book for most of the way through it...but then I came to the end. ***Warning: I'm about to reveal a MASSIVE SPOILER for this book, so stop reading now if you don't want to know the ending!***

Basically I hated this ending because it was a variant of the "it was all a dream" gimmick. We get the whole love story between Cecelia and Robbie; we see how they're torn apart because of Briony; we follow them through all the pain and suffering of World War II; finally we get to see them reunited. Even though their life isn't perfect, and they've both been scarred by the past, they have managed to carve out a not-entirely-hopeless future.

And then we find out that Briony has been lying the whole time:
I can no longer think what purpose would be served if, say, I tried to persuade my reader, by direct or indirect means, that Robbie Turner died of septicemia at Bray Dunes on 1 June 1940, or that Cecelia was killed in September of the same year by the bomb that destroyed Balham Underground station. That I never saw them in that year. That my walk across London ended at the church on Clapham Common, and that a cowardly Briony limped back to the hospital, unable to confront her recently bereaved sister. That the letters the lovers wrote are in the archives of the War Museum.
What the hell, Ian McEwan? I know you were making a Big Artistic Point and that your ending has a certain power, but seriously, what the hell.
