I've thought about trying to read more romances myself lately. Do you know of any set in the Victorian era? Maybe I will have to do some research at the library tonight... That opening sentence for April Lady sounds interesting, I still haven't read any Georgette Heyer yet, but did buy a used copy of Black Sheep.

You know, I started to think about Victorian-era romances, and I realized I haven't actually read that many! Most of my favorites are set in the Regency and Napoleonic eras preceding the Victorian. Heyer is a must, obviously, and I would also recommend Jude Morgan -- Indiscretion and An Accomplished Woman are both very good. Lauren Willig's "Pink Carnation" series is a fun, Pimpernel-esque romp involving spies! Patricia C. Wrede and Caroline Stevermer's Sorcery and Cecelia is a fun YA read in epistolary form. Finally, I also like Deanna Raybourn's "Silent" series (beginning with Silent in the Grave), which actually IS Victorian, but it also contains a strong mystery component along with the romance.

Hope that helps, and I'll let you know if I think of anything else!
