Today I found yet another intriguing challenge! Apologies if you're all sick of these...I'm just keeping myself amused here. :)
This year-long challenge is hosted by
Sarah Reads Too Much, and the basic idea is to read one classic from each of nine different categories. Click the picture for more details and to sign up. I'm interested in trying this, especially because I have no idea what I'm going to read for some of these categories! Here they are:
- Read any 19th-century classic. -- I have lots of options for this one; some possibilities include Nicholas Nickleby by Charles Dickens, The Mill on the Floss by George Eliot, and Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea by Jules Verne.
- Read any 20th-century classic. -- Not sure about this one. Of Human Bondage by W. Somerset Maugham is a definite possibility.
- Reread a classic of your choice. -- This will almost definitely be an Austen novel, whichever one I'm drawn to at the time!
- Read a classic play. -- No real ideas here. Maybe Medea by Euripides? I think I'd prefer something a tad more modern, though!
- Read a classic mystery/horror/crime novel. -- I'm not sure what qualifies as "classic" here. Would an Agatha Christie or Dorothy Sayers book count? Maybe I should play it safe with something by Wilkie Collins.
- Read a classic romance. -- Again, not really sure what would fit in this category! I'm thinking of something along the lines of Anya Seton's Katherine, but I've already read that, so I'll have to find something else.
- Read a classic that has been translated into your language from its original language. -- Drawing a complete blank with this one, for some reason.
- Read a classic award winner, a.k.a. a classic that has won any established literary award. -- Hmm, guess I'd better start looking through those Pulitzer and Nobel prize lists! Booth Tarkington's Alice Adams would work.
- Read a classic set in a country that you (realistically speaking) will never visit. (This can be a fictional or no-longer-existing country!) -- Hmm, no ideas for this one either.
Looking forward to figuring out which books to read for this! Suggestions are very welcome!
