Flirting with Danger

143. Suzanne Enoch, Flirting with Danger

Samantha Jellicoe is not quite your average beautiful twentysomething with a clever mind, a sense of humor, and a penchant for campy monster movies; she also happens to be an extremely accomplished thief. Her latest job is to steal a valuable artifact from British billionaire Richard Addison. She breaks into his palatial Palm Beach home quite easily, but things get much more complicated when a bomb explodes in the house, killing a security guard and injuring both Addison and Samantha herself. Now Sam is the chief suspect in the bombing, but Rick Addison believes that she’s innocent. Having no other choice, Sam makes a deal with Rick: if he helps clear her name, she’ll help him figure out who the real murderer is. As they search for answers, their mutual attraction to one another grows, but they’ll have to outwit a killer before they can reach their happy ending.

This romance novel was a fun, lighthearted, escapist read. I liked that the book obviously doesn’t take itself too seriously and has a humorous tone overall. Sam and Rick are both a bit clichéd, but they also have some depth to them. Their actions and feelings with respect to one another seem very plausible, given the events in both their pasts. The mystery plot is a bit convoluted, but it’s not too hard to follow, and it made fairly logical sense. I felt a little cheated when I learned the identity of the villain, since he’s not a very major character in the book, but oh well. I also questioned the characters’ physical actions at certain points; I would often try to picture a certain movement in my head and think, “Wait, that’s not physically possible!” (And no, I’m not talking about the adult scenes, haha.) On the whole, though, I enjoyed this book and would consider reading more in the series.

In other news, my mom and I went to see "The King's Speech" today, and it was fantastic! Both Colin Firth and Geoffrey Rush did a phenomenal job; Firth seriously deserves an Oscar for this. Anyway, I know it's not book-related, but I just had to recommend this movie! Of course, if anyone knows of a good biography of King George VI, I'd very much appreciate it! :)
