So I still haven't heard back from either of the jobs I interviewed with. I did get a call from the All TEMPS temp agency to have a phone interview tomorrow, so maybe i'll be temping for a bit. The Pitt job that i applied for still shows up as being "in progress" according to the online applicant website. I wish that these people would get back sooner, so i would be able to know if i should be looking for something else. note to anyone who's moving to a new city and does not have any money saved up: make sure that you have a job way before you go! In my desperate times, i signed up for a study at Pitt that involves drinking a vodka cranberry, sitting around for 6 hours and being paid 60 bucks (that's like 10 bucks and hour more than my current income). I'm thinking the end of the week might be good plasma donation time. ahh, gotta love it when being able to eat relies on selling bodily fluids and participating in research.
i'm very excited, however, as today was the first day of my practicum for my role and function course. i was assigned to observe a kindergarten class. the kids are super cute, but very tattle-taily. i'm surprised by how much the students actually do. anything i can remember from that age was just listening to stories and playing, i'm not even sure i was there all day. these kids have to change classes and rooms and go all day. they have some classes with first graders too. the school seems really overcrowded and the facilities are pretty small. plus it's k-8 so theres a big assortment of age groups. the weirdest thing to me was just how disorgainized everything seemed. the kids had like 5 different teachers, so a lot of the time was just spent trying to get the kids to settle down after moving classes and then trying to figure out who was who. i think it would be cool to observe a couple different schools throughout my time at duquesne, because i'm not sure if this is how all schools are or just this one. i tried to just observe, but these girls kept coming up and trying to get me to join in. they all got around me in a circle and were clapping and wanted me to play with them during recess and talk to them in the hallway and stuff. it's sort of awkward because the teachers i guess just expected me to help out, but i have no idea what the norm is or what is appropriate. hopefully i'll figure out more as i go along. it's fun to have the student teaching experience without the whole lesson planning side. it was also interesting to just see how some kids got things right away and others were pretty much lost. unfortunately, the kids that were lost were sort of brushed aside and herded onto the next classes. i guess i better start thinking of things that could help them, cause that'll be my job in 5 years.
allllrighty, i'm going to go read for a bit, take a nap and be a giant bum until it's time for class!
