Will most denominations within Christianity 'recognize' a marriage, even if the ceremony was performed within a different denomination?

The reason I ask is because my roommate is getting married in June and the service is going to be done by a Lutheran pastor. She herself is Catholic and her mother would like her to get the Catholic church to recognize her marriage as well, which the Church has agreed to do after loads of paperwork, a pre-Canaa meeting, and having a witness (me!) sign a notarized form assuring that she and her fiance aren't currently married to each other or anyone else.

I found this whole series of events really curious, and was wondering if any other denominations required a similar process or if it was only a Catholic thing. Can anyone enlighten me? Anyone else been through a similar process - Catholic or otherwise?
