Great and Holy Friday

Apr 01, 2010 22:46

Hymnody only for the next week or so. If you want to read about what we do, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holy_Week#Great_and_Holy_Friday

He who clothes Himself in light as in a garment, stood naked at the judgement; on His cheek He received blows from the hands which He had formed. The lawless people nailed ot the Cross the Lord of Glory. Then the veil of the temple was rent in twain and the sun was darkened, for it could not bear to see such outrage done to God, before whom all things tremble. Let us worship Him.

Seeing Thee hanging on the Cross, O Christ the Creator and God of all, bitterly Thy Virgin Mother cried: O my Son, where is the beauty of Thy form? I cannot bear to look upon Thee crucified unjustly. Make haste, then, to arise, that I too may see Thy Resurrection on the third day from the dead.

O Christ our God, Thou hast worked salvation in the midst of the earth: Thou hast stretched out Thy most pure hands upon the Cross, and gathered together all the nations as they cry: O Lord, glory be to Thee.

Thee, Who art clothed with light as with a garment did Joseph with Nicodemus take down from the tree, and beholding Thee dead, naked, and unburied, in his tender compassion he lamented, saying: woe! Woe is me, O sweetest Jesus! When, but a little while ago the sun saw Thee hanging upon the Cross, it wrapped itself in darkness, and the earth quaked with fear, and the veil of the temple was rent in twaing, and, behold, I see Thee willingly submitting to death for my sake. How shall I bury Thee, O my God? And how shall I wrap Thee in a winding sheet? How shall I touch Thine all-pure body with my hands? What song shall I sing unto Thee at Thy departure, O Thou Compassionate one? I magnify Thy sufferings; I sing the praises of Thy burial and Resurrection, crying out: O Lord, glory be to Thee.

Today, He who hung the earth upon the waters is hung upon the Cross.
Today, He who hung the earth upon the waters is hung upon the Cross.
Today, He who hung the earth upon the waters is hung upon the Cross.
He who is King of the angels is arrayed in a crown of thorns.
He who wraps the heaven in clouds is wrapped in the purple of mockery.
He who in Jordan set Adam free receives blows upon His face.
The Bridegroom of the Church is transfixed with nails.
The Son of the virgin is pierced with a spear.
We venerate Thy passion, O Christ.
We venerate Thy passion, O Christ.
We venerate Thy passion, O Christ.
Show us also Thy glorious Resurrection.

good friday, church year
