oooh you might open a can of worms with this one! i haven't been in three weeks because i've been sniffly and feverish, and i don't think that makes me a "bad" christian at all.

Catholics still have to go, even with sniffles. We just try not breathe on others. We have instructions about this sort of thing, though. My husband didn't go to RCIA last Wednesday because his back was out and he couldn't walk, but he was put back together in time to go to Mass on Sunday. ;)

True, although a more serious sickness, like a bad flu, can certainly be excusable. A regular old cold, as crappy as it can make us feel, isn't sufficient reason, though. And like you said, it's important when you do have a cold to be conscious of it, like coughing/sneezing into your arm (NEVER YOUR HANDS!!!), probably refraining from the actual shaking of hands at the sign of peace, I would also say making sure to sit at the end of the pew on the outside so that if you need to get up due to coughing fit or some other reason, you don't have to climb over a bunch of people to do it.

But, we've all had those days when we're feeling crappy and just don't go anyway. Thank God for confession ;)

Thank God for confession ;)

Amen to that!

Where I live, there's a huge population of retirees so the majority of our parishoners are elderly, some of them very sick or very disabled. I figure, if they can go, I can go. It's inspirational. ;)

Going to church no more makes you a Christian, then going to McDonalds makes you a hamburger. I believe in going for fellowship, support, comfort, learning etc. I don't believe it effects my salvation is I miss church because of work, illness, etc. Do I believe it is important for my growth? Oh yes.

What would you say are the necessary obligations of the third commandment in a Christian context?

The most recent one that caught my attention was "I had to go to work later in the day, and the only way I'd get some rest was to skip the service." She literally used the "day of rest" idea as justification for missing church service.

The mind boggles.

Going to Church isn't work. For many of us, it's the essential rest to get through the week.
