MATTERS OF THE HEART
Chapter 52

They arrived back at the apartment in record time having practically run all the way. Pierce armed with all the copies of the magazine that he could carry.
Meryl headed straight for the vodka bottle and poured herself a more than generous measure and downed it in one, pouring herself another straight away.
"Shit!" said Pierce, throwing the magazines on the sofa. "How the fuck did they find out? Who have they been talking to?"
"Well how would I know?" rep
lied Meryl.
"And, buying up all those copies is a waste of time. What about all the other copies, on newsstands all over the country?! I need to call Don, and the kids." Just then the house phone rang. Pierce picked it up. "Hello! Oh Don hi, here's Meryl," he said passing the phone to her. "Don....." she began. "Well your secret is out," said Don. "The paps are camped outside here as we speak. I hope you have your statement ready for when they discover where you are. I'd get on to your publicist right away if I were you," he suggested.
"Is Lou there with you? Let me speak to her Don, please," said Meryl. "She's went off to summer camp this morning, so at least she is away from it all, and I've rung the camp and forewarned them, should the paps discover where Lou is, and I have spoken to her, she's fine " replied Don. "Oh thank God, yeah I forgot for a moment. My head is all over the place," said Meryl.
"Of course, we will deny it," she told Don. "So please, back us up on this one for now Don, will you? Just while we figure out what to do." Reluctantly Don agreed and they finished the call.
"Fuck, fuck, fuck!" exclaimed Meryl. "What are we going to do Pierce?" she asked.
"Babe, we've known this would happen for ages, just not quite this soon. We just need to sit down, and calmly decide how we are going to play this," replied Pierce.
Meryl checked her phone to find she had been inundated with messages, from friends, Phyllida, the kids. Ignoring the ones from her friends and Phyllida, she rang each of the kids in turn. They were all in favour of keeping it quiet and going down the 'just good friends' route. None of them were ready for the onslaught that would inevitably ensue once the full story broke. At the moment it was just rumours.
"The kids are happy for us to just deny it! Which is fine by me, however I think it might be best if we come clean. What if they discover we are living together? Here? There is no way we can convince them there is nothing going on if that happens," said Meryl. "We have been living in a bubble, ignoring this for too long. We should have thought things through and been fully prepared. We should have gone public months ago, well before the premiere. That way all the gossip and media attention would now be a distant memory.
Pierce sighed. She was right! However, as much as he wanted to shout out to the world how much he loved Meryl, he had Keeley to think about! He knew she wouldn't hold anything back. The press would have a field day with her. He also knew what a vindictive cow she could be.. She would be telling her side of the story, of that he had no doubt.
"You're right Meryl, and there is nothing I would love more, but there's Keeley. We have to tread very carefully with her. I'll call her. Hopefully she won't have seen the magazine, unless one her bitchy friend’s has shown her a copy. I don't think any of them have ever liked me. They've just put up with me for her sake,” said Pierce.
Meryl had calmed down and was thinking a lot more rationally. “We should call our publicists ask them to come here! Now! Today! Give them the whole story! Before Keeley gets a chance to get in first! That way it can be in the papers tomorrow! “ suggested Meryl. “However we play it, which way we play it, whether it’s now or next, week, next month, it’s gonna be tough for all involved. We might as well face the music now and get it over and done with so we can get on with our lives. I’ll also call Phyllida and inform her of our intentions. What do you say?” she asked him.
“Let me talk to Keeley first babe, will you? See how the land lies there,” answered Pierce.
Ten minutes later after talking to his wife, Pierce found Meryl in the kitchen. She looked up when he entered. “Well! What did she say?” she asked him. “She was fine! Surprisingly! She said she had seen the magazine, which wasn’t a surprise to me. In fact she was verging on a slight touch of sympathy. I think she may have come to her senses. I don’t think she wants to put the boys through any more stress. She is thinking of them, for a change rather than just herself. She even said the boys can come over to New York for Thanksgiving, if we wanted,” said Pierce. “She did?” asked Meryl. “That’s great, it will be lovely to spend some time with them. So what has brought on this new Keeley and where is the old one?” she asked him.

“I don’t know,” answered Pierce. “It’s not like her at all. She’s done completely the opposite to what I thought she would do.” They talked a little more and called their respective publicists, who were both on their way over.
Now, sitting in the living room, discussing their joint statements, they both felt a sense of relief mixed with anticipation. Relief that they would no longer have to hide their love away and anticipation of what was to come. The onslaught of the media, being all over them in the days to come. Finally, they were alone.
“Shall I pop round to that deli and pick up something to eat? All this has given me an appetite, and I’m sure the last thing you feel like doing is cooking,” asked Pierce. “Great idea. I’ll open a bottle of wine,” said Meryl.
Meryl took a bottle of chilled white from the fridge and uncorked it, leaving it to breathe. She spotted Pierce’s cellphone on the table. On impulse, she picked it up and found herself scrolling through until she found Keeley’s number. She dialled it. It was picked up after the second ring. “Hi Pierce! Checking up on me to see if I’ve changed my mind? Well I haven’t! You’re safe,” said Keeley. “Keeley hi, it’sMeryl. “Oh what do you want?” asked Keeley. “I just thought I would call and thank you for being so understanding about all this,” replied Meryl. “Pierce and I really appreciate it.” “I’m not doing this for you, not even for Pierce. I’m doing it for my sons. They don’t deserve any of this. I’m trying to protect them. They are my priority now and they do not deserve any of this. You can tell Pierce I am taking them away for a few weeks until it all dies down. I don’t want them to suffer any more than they have to, especially at school,” said Keeley. “I understand, but thanks anyway,” said Meryl hanging up. Well she had tried, she thought to herself. She could understand Keeley’s feelings. She imagined how she would feel if Pierce ever had an affair and she shuddered at the very thought.

By the time she had gotten some glasses out Pierce had returned with pizzas and ice cream. After they had eaten and cleared away, they relaxed and finished off the wine. “So! We’ve done it! We are going public!” stated Pierce. “We are doing the right thing aren’t we Pierce?” she asked him. “It had to happen sooner or later babe, and yes, we are doing the right thing. I promise!” replied Pierce.
Neither of them slept much that night, both dreading the onslaught of the media but relieved in a sense, that the secret they had kept for more than a year, was about to become public knowledge.
At 6 am the following morning, Meryl stirred, and woke up to find the space beside her empty. She got up, threw her robe on and went in search of Pierce. As she entered the living room, he was coming through the front door, armed with coffees, Danish pastries and a copy of the New York Times. Meryl rushed over and grabbed to newspaper from him. There it was on page two. A full page spread with a small paragraph at the bottom with their statements.
“STREEPTEASE”
Meryl Streep and Pierce Brosnan an item!

It went on to say how they had started their affair on the set of Mamma Mia and had carried it on after filming had finished and how Meryl had left her husband of nearly 30 years on the back of it.
Well it’s not as bad as I thought it would be,” commented Meryl, after reading the article. “The thing now is to wait for the press to find out where we live, and they will. There will be someone out there who will tell them, there always is, they always find out.”
“Well we’ll cross that bridge when we come to it babe, that’s all we can do.

“I can’t bear the thought of my name being spread all over the papers for the wrong reasons, you know how private I am. Still I suppose I should be thankful that my kids are all grown up and able to deal with things,” stated Meryl.

Pierce pulled her into his arms, where she rested her head on his shoulder, while he stroked her hair. “All we can do is try to carry on as normal,” said Pierce. “Not let them get to us. It will all blow over in a couple of weeks, when they find something else to talk about. “
Meryl wasn’t convinced. She had never been one to blow her own trumpet and was, deep down very shy, although this shyness had got better over the years. But she knew this was big news. She was well aware how her popularity had risen over the last few years and in a lot of ways she loved it, but in so many ways she hated how it interfered with her personal life, and now her personal life was going to be public knowledge.
She felt her phone vibrate in her pocket, and retrieving it, saw she had several missed calls, mostly from friends. Obviously calling to find out what the hell was going on. Only her two closest friends knew about her and Pierce, although everyone knew she and Don were no longer together.
She called each friend, one by one and briefly explained, arranging to meet with each of them, when the dust had settled.
“This coffee will be stone cold,” shouted Pierce from the kitchen. Meryl joined him. “Put it in the microwave, it’ll be ok!” replied Meryl, unwrapping the Danish pastries. They looked inviting but she had no appetite.
“So what do we do now? Just sit here and wait for the media to descend?” asked /Meryl. “No! We carry on as normal. Go about our daily business as if nothing has happened. We answer ‘no comment’ when confronted, in fact, how about we contact a newspaper and offer to do an interview?” asked Pierce.
“Oh my God! Are you serious? You know how they twist things around! That’s a ridiculous idea Pierce. I can’t believe you have just said that.”
“Think about it! We could lay down some ground rules, have our lawyers present, and obtain a recording of the interview. I think it is a great idea, and who knows, the public may even come out on our side,” said Pierce. “Think about it Meryl!”
“Ok I’ll think about it but I am not promising anything yet,” replied Meryl.
Later after they had showered, they spent the rest of the morning fielding calls from one person or another. Finally as they were sitting down relaxing with a sandwich and a glass of wine the house phone rang. Meryl looked up in shock. Hardly anybody ran that number as only a handful of people apart from Don and the kids knew the number.
She answered with a tentative “Hello” “Meryl darling it’s Stan!” Meryl relaxed. “It’s Tucci!” she mouthed to Pierce. “Hi Stan!” “I was on my way over to discuss something with you. Have you looked outside Meryl?” he asked her. “No! Why?” she answered. “I think you better had” said Stanley. She walked over to the window and looked down at the street below and gasped. There were hundreds of photographers and reporters camped outside. “They didn’t get your address from me darling, I can assure you,” said Stanley. “Oh my God, yes, yes I know Stan. I know you wouldn’t do something like that. Listen, I have to go. I’ll call you soon.” Said Meryl ringing off.
“Pierce, get over here,” she shouted. “Pierce walked over to her and glanced out of the window. “Shit! How the hell did they discover where we were?” he asked. “Well I don’t know. If I did I’d be doing something about it. I bet it was Keeley. It’s just the sort of thing she would do,” said Meryl. “What? Oh come on babe! She’s cool with us. I told you that and besides she doesn’t have our address. It wasn’t Keeley,” said Pierce.
“Why are you defending her all of a sudden?” she asked him. “I’m not defending her, I’m just telling you, she doesn’t know where we live,” answered Pierce. “Mmmm, well I’m not convinced. Somebody knows other than the family, Stan and a few others and I’m damn sure none of them would tell, so it has to be her,” said Meryl.
“Meryl, babe, I swear that she doesn’t have the address and she wouldn’t do something like this. Not now after what we discussed. The kids are her first priority. The last thing she, or I want is the paparazzi all over the boys,” said Pierce.
“She’s been vehemently against us from the start! I don’t believe for one minute that she is ‘cool’ with us. I bet this is her way of getting back at us,” said Meryl.
“Oh come on Meryl. Anyway, what’s all the fuss about? Our families have known about us almost since the beginning, and our close friends. Why make so much about this? So the whole world is in on it! So what? It means we can get on with our lives without sneaking around. Lighten up a little,” said Pierce.
“Lighten up!” shouted Meryl. “I have fought for years to guard my privacy. Keep my personal life out of the limelight. Protect my kids. I just can’t bear the thought of my life being scrutinised by the world’s media.”
“I suppose you think I do” stated Pierce, reaching to take her hand, but she pulled away from him. “Oh come on babe. We’re in this together here, don’t shut me out. We knew we would have to face this one day. I thought you were ready.”
“I am…..I was, but on my terms,” answered Meryl.
“Your terms! It’s all about you isn’t it Meryl? What you want! How you feel! Your kids! There are two of us here, in case you had forgotten. Don’t be so selfish,” said Pierce.
“Selfish? Me? I think you’ll find that I am the least selfish in this partnership Pierce,” she retorted.
“Do me a favour Meryl! All along it’s more or less been what you want! I’ve bent over backwards to please you. Do what you want! Say what I think you want to hear! I can’t believe you think I am selfish!” said Pierce, exasperated.
“Say what you think I want to hear? What the fuck is that supposed to mean?” shouted Meryl. “So all the times you say you love me you just said it because you think that’s what I wanted to hear? I don’t believe this. I can’t do this anymore,” she shouted back. “I need to get out of here. I need some space.”
“Don’t be silly babe. Come on. You are playing right into their hands. Walking away won’t solve anything,” said Pierce, following her as she went into the bedroom and began to throw some clothes into an overnight bag.
“You think?” she asked. “Well tough!”
“You’re being ridiculous Meryl. Just calm down a little and let’s talk about this. You can’t just walk out at the first sign of trouble. You’re better than that,” said Pierce.

“Can’t I?” she responded. “Well then watch me! Look! I’m packed! I’m calling a cab and I’m out of here”
She picked up her bag and called a cab and walked out, leaving Pierce open mouthed and wondering exactly what had just happened. Has he just calmly let the love of his life walk away without a fight?.........
