This week our tutoiral focus was on the short play Andre's mother. A short play with a lot of hidden messages. The play reveals that Andre was a homosexual who recently passed away from AIDS. The characters introduced are Cal (Andre's boyfriend), Arthur who is his father, Cal's sister, Penny who breaks down the sadness within the story with her humour. the last character is the most important, Andre's mother who did not know of Andres Sexuality and had to deal with this along with his death.
The thing that amazed me was that the entire play is centred around Andre's mother and yet she is mute within the performance. This is the magic of theatre, i think that if this is only read, no real emotion can be seen, a script has to be performed for the true meaning and hidden messages of the performance to be put forward. Even with a performer, the audience may still not recieve the original message as the directors adapt performances to their own view, however by performing a piece we can see emotions, facial expressions, gestures and body language are what create a performance, as scripts don't explain all of this like a creative writting piece.
