There's this thing in The Information by Martin Amis. About how women have the power to MAKE FEEL BAD.

I used to think it was a bit crude, a rare bum note in the Amis symphony. But I've learned how completely and accurately it somes up the power that women have. Not just the power to make feel bad, but the power to make feel good as well. Either through a look or a gesture or a sentence. By offering or withholding affection. It's scary powerful.

I don't want to sound mysoginistic. I expect plenty of men have variations on this power themselves, although I don't think that I've ever had it.

I feel very bad.
