Today, I was perusing the international postage regulations relating to dangerous and prohibited goods, as one does (1). I came across a few fascinating - and yet, also kind of dull - facts. Allow me to share them with you. (My postage facts. Let me show you them.)
Did you know that:
* It is prohibited to import non-metric weights and measures into Niger? They also forbid the import of "Trademarks, French, false".
* Nigeria doesn’t want your artificial flowers, ironmongery or Swatches (dunno if they mean the watch, or bundles of textile samples. Probably the latter since they also prohibit importing textiles.)
* Cape Verde doesn’t allow "labels resembling postage stamps".
* Norway wants nothing made of, or containing, wild oats. Probably they’ve got more than enough of their own to sow, those lusty Vikings.
* Cambodia requires import permits for pretty much everything, except certain quaintly titled goods such as "provisions for a journey" and "traveller’s requisites".
* Albania wants no "extravagant clothing". No sir, none of that.
* The UAE frowns sternly upon oiled paper.
* It's good to see that the Netherlands Antilles and Aruba are taking a stand for writers, by prohibiting the import of "publications that infringe authors' rights".
* And the UK lumps horror comics together with flick knives and indecent videos as things they want none of in their green and pleasant land.
Here, check it out. (3Mb PDF file.)
(1) You’re no doubt wondering why I was doing this. It was for work, OK, and therefore all good.
