I've bought art. This art, in fact: Chitty Chitty Bang Bang We Love You by Nick Stathopoulos.
I went to see Nick's latest exhibition Toy Porn 2 at the NG Gallery in Chippendale on Friday evening, and Nick happened to be there, getting ready for a function there later that night. So we walked around the exhibit, and talked about the paintings and the toys that inspired them, and got to mutually enthusing about the Chitty Chitty Bang Bang movie which we'd both loved as kids (and still do). I well remember the Corgi toy Chittys I had as a kid. Anyway, tucked away in the corner - left over from his 2010 exhibition, the first Toy Porn - was this painting. Nick said he was kind of glad it hadn't sold because he wanted to keep it and he'd spent more time on this one than any other for that exhibit.
But alas for Nick, I was mesmerised by the painting, and within a minute or two I knew I had to have it. Put a bit of a dent in the credit card to be sure, but when a painting speaks to you like that, you have to listen. Ah well, Nick's happy that at least it's gone to a fellow Chitty fan.
As a bonus, when I went to collect it this morning, I met Nick again, along with his partner Adrian, and they happened to be having lunch with Shaun Tan and his wife!
And the sun was shining. What a great day.
