my dad has an intel imac and he called me from the apple store thursday because the hard drive had died and he was wondering what his options were. the genius posse had quoted him $400 to ship it back and replace the old (250 GB) drive*, and they would absolutely not allow him to keep the old drive, on the off chance he wanted to take it to a data ( Read more... )

I'm impressed--I don't know if I'd be brave enough to open up a Mac, but you're more handy than me. I'm going to ask my brother why Apple won't give back a customer's hard drive. He's a "creative," rather than a "genius," but he'll know the party line. Sounds fishy to me.

And I mean the policy or the employee's version of it sounds fishy, not your dad's story.

my guess is it's just a liability/logistics thing. either they are too lazy to accommodate people, or they are worried that customers could claim that damage happened to the drive while it was in apple's possession.
