Depending on which variant it is, but i'd rather not risk recurrent malaria personally.
We took mefloquine (Larium) and managed to avoid the evil side effects - some good dreams though.
It would seem a bit off if there was an undocumented side effect but sometimes it does happen (some food additives and the current anti-depressive depression being what i'm thinking of).
According to WHO for your region we have the following - "THAILAND
Capital: Bangkok Altitude: 10 m Malaria: Malaria risk exists throughout the year in rural, especially forested and hilly, areas of the whole country, mainly towards the international borders. There is no risk in cities and the main tourist resorts (e.g. Bangkok, Chiangmai, Pattaya, Phuket, Samui). P. falciparum resistant to chloroquine and sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine reported. Resistance to mefloquine and to quinine reported from areas near the borders with Cambodia and Myanmar. Recommended prevention in risk areas near Cambodia and Myanmar borders: IV" Where the IV refers to - High risk of falciparum malaria plus drug resistance, or moderate/low risk falciparum malaria but high drug resistance Mosquito bite prevention plus either mefloquine, doxycycline or atovaquone/proguanil (take one that no resistance is reported for in the specific areas to be visited)
The summary of which is unfortunatly that you can't go down to one of the chloroquine based drugs if your near Cambodia or Myanmar.
