I was so scared when I heard they were doing a backstory episode for Tony. Can you just imagine the myriad ways in which this could have gone wrong? But honestly, I think this might be my favorite episode of the show, ever. Definitely my favorite over the past couple of years. Tony was so… eeeee! I can’t even be rational about it, while I was watching it I just devolved into this big ball of squee and I kept flapping my arms and doing this weird little chicken dance. IDEK.

Gibbs was just... OMG. I really can't talk about it. The thing with the steak! And he was all, "Please don't make fun of your son, he's too awesome for that." And, and! He was so nice to Tony! But not too nice, because that would be weird. It was great to see how different and grown up Tony is when he's being all SRS BZNS with Gibbs.

What I really loved was that it was consistent with canon, but it also wasn’t a rehash of the 9438390 Tony’s-horrible-father fics. And, OMG, for the first time in a long time, I felt like he was actually Gibbs’ peer instead of the sort-of-capable class clown who gets smacked down all the time. It really explained so much about his personality, too. So sad to see him cave so quickly every time* his dad wanted something. But he was also so incredibly independent, it was kind of awesome. I’m really curious to see where they go with it. Next week will probably be back to the same old stuff, but for now, I’m really enjoying it. I hope they bring Robert Wagner back soon if they’re going to have this caliber of episode when he’s on.

* Sad fact: I still have to fight the urge not to spell this as one word. Thank you Britney Spears. :(
